A week ago, I gave a professional development segment on humanizing online learning spaces at the start of the year and building strong relationships from the get-go.* One simple start to such an effort is to create a teacher intro video that introduces students to who you are as their teacher.
Take a look at what one of the middle school science departments made.
Two things stand out:
- This team is thoughtful. They produced a video that took some time and cleverness; credibility has started.
- This team has passion. According to Stanford's Bill Damon, that's not a small deal.
- This is a team of individuals. The group's personalities really shine here — I couldn't watch this thing without smiling and being a bit envious of this team's students.
Have you made an intro video that might inspire another teacher? Share it in the comments! I'd love to see more.

My son had Mr. Sylvester in 6th and now Ms. Weinkauf in 7th. He was excited to see Mr. Sylvester on the video. Familiarity for an unfamiliar situation. Good job Lincoln science teachers!
