Hey there, colleague! Thanks again for your interest in the student motivation leadership course I'm preparing. I've been getting some questions I wanted to answer for you this morning as we all head in to our workweeks.
What are your objectives in teaching this course?
I want you to be able to lead a five key beliefs movement at your school — one that empowers teachers and students, one that produces more learning with less stress. To help with this, I'm going to let you see how I think about doing this same thing when I work with schools. You're going to hear lessons I've learned the hard way while offering PD experiences in nearly 200 settings. You're going to get inside my head and see how I seek to develop and sustain credibility as a PD person and how I walk the balance beam between overwhelming and underwhelming teachers, between being too pushy and not assertive enough.
I also expect that we'll have 100 of the smartest and most earnest folks in education in this group. So: we will learn a lot just by being together and exploring these ideas and challenges.
How many people will be allowed in this first cohort of the course — this “beta group”?
I'm planning 100 spots: first come, first served.
What do you mean first come, first served?
Registration will open at 8am EST on February 1. At that time, you will receive an email from me with a registration link. For the first 48 hours, only the people on this interest list (you're one of them) will have access to that link.
But: right now, there are over 1,600 people on the interest list. So, the first 100 people to secure enrollment — with a purchase order or a credit card — will have access to that beta group.
What if I'm doing a purchase order?
Talk with your financial folks about what they need from me. Probably, they'll need a W9 — just email me and I can get you that. They may also need a quote — so, you can show them this email: registration is $750/person.
As soon as you have initiated the PO process (that is, you've received confirmation that you will be getting a PO for the course), email me and I will reserve your spot. But to secure your spot, I will need the completed PO by February 1.
What if I'm paying by district credit card?
That will be easy. As soon as enrollment opens, you'll be able to use the card on the registration link that I email to you.
(Out of fairness to folks paying with district credit card, folks who secure their spots early via PO will not count against the 100-person cap.)
What will happen when I enroll?
You'll get:
1) Immediate access to the student motivation library — all course videos, all Youtube videos, and all articles I've ever written on the topic, all in one place.
2) Immediate access to the group discussion platform we'll be using — introduce yourself, give us detail on what you're hoping to achieve as a student motivation leader.
When does the course start and end?
Start: March 7. (But, thanks to the library and the discussion platform, it soft starts as soon as you enroll.)
End: April 8.
What happens when the course starts?
I'll assign 2-3 asynchronous videos each week (10 minutes or shorter each), plus a small action research project. You'll be encouraged to “learn in public” using the group discussion platform.
I'll also host 1 live (and recorded) Zoom session each week. This will be a 1.5 hour session on Mondays from 4-5:30pm EST. In these sessions, I'll bring content that I've not shared anywhere else — stuff specific to leading student motivation movements in a school.
When are the weekly live sessions?
Mondays at 4-5:30pm EST. See above.
What happens if I can't make the live sessions?
I do recommend trying to make at least one session live, even if it means arranging for someone to cover your class for the time period.
But, I totally understand that some of you won't be able to make most of them. That's why I'm recording these.
What's the time commitment?
I'd estimate at least 5 hours per week.
Is the $750 price per person or per team?
It's per person.
What does the $750 price include?
It includes the following:
- access to the Student Motivation Course video lesson library (~40 videos from Dave on student motivation)
- free alumni enrollment in any subsequent cohorts of this course
- the live sessions with Dave
- 12-months access to the discussion platform
Got more questions?

Best to you this week, colleague,
