The MGC Cheat Sheet

September 25, 2025 By Dave Stuart Jr. Leave a Comment

Dear colleague,

In my PD work with schools during the last two years, I've been fortunate to have a handful of schools where the scope of the work is longer than a single-day PD. In these places, I've gained systems-level, boots-on-the-ground insight into how the methodology in The Will to Learn works.

One thing that's become clear is that the slower we go, the better we end up doing. At Grand River Prep, they planned on forefronting three strategies from the book for the first year of implementation but adjusted to just focus on Tracking Attempted Moments of Genuine Connection. In my own school, administrators did something similar but for two years, using lots of small MGC-related exercises in the midst of our team PDs and meetings through the year.

From those two schools and the select others I've partnered with, I developed this MGC cheat sheet for attaching to your MGC clipboard. I find it helps when I'm stuck with a student or need a reminder on why the heck I'm doing this in the first place. And if it helps me, the guy telling people to do MGCs, then heck — maybe it'll help you.

Sharing in case it's helpful!

Teaching right beside you,

DSJR

P.S. I'm hosting a PWYW live/recorded session in a couple weeks — 77 of 100 spots remaining. You can register here. Thanks for your support!
