The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers: Spiritual Insights from the World's Most Beloved Neighbor Paperback – September 9, 2007
Purchase options and add-ons
Celebrate the release of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks with an inside look at Mister Rogers' spiritual legacy.
For more than 30 years, Fred Rogers was the kindly neighbor of children worldwide. Why were kids drawn to him? Mining personal interviews and correspondence, this book goes beyond Rogers's gentle manner and signature red sweater to reveal the deep faith that sustained him in his many roles—television personality, educator, philosopher, and minister.
Tom Brokaw of NBC Nightly News once said of the American icon Fred Rogers, "Mister Rogers was an ordained minister, but he never talked about God on his program. He didn't need to."
Eight years before his death, Fred Rogers met author, educator, and speaker Amy Hollingsworth. What started as a television interview turned into a wonderful friendship spanning dozens of letters detailing the driving force behind this gentle man of extraordinary influence.
This special book is a treat for fans everywhere, containing:
- An intimate portrait of the real Mister Rogers
- An exploration of the beloved star’s deep faith journey and its lasting impact
- Personal interviews and letters
The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers focuses on Mr. Rogers' spiritual legacy, but it is much more than that. It shows us a man who, to paraphrase the words of St. Francis of Assisi, "preached the gospel at all times; when necessary, he used words."

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2023This book about Mister Roger's is a deeply profound book yet simple enough to understand...just like Mister Roger's. Amy does such a beautiful job in giving us a deep look into Fred Roger's faith that made him the kind and incredible man of God he truly was. He looked at people through the eyes of love realizing we all have purpose and meaning and he was able to allow others, children and adults, to feel the hurt and pain they feel without shame. Fred was the real deal and honestly this book has helped me to look at people through the eyes of Gods love for them. Thank you Mister Roger's and thank you Amy
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2018Not having grown up in the U.S., I didn’t know much about Mr. Rogers, him and have never seen a complete episode of his show. We recently saw the movie about him and it brought me to tears. If you haven’t yet seen it, I highly recommend it.
This was an enjoyable and quick read with some beautiful reminders as to how to live. The author shares what she learned from her friendship with Mr. Rogers.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“If you ever fall into quicksand, the most important thing to remember is this: take your time. Quicksand, unlike water, will not move out of the way to let you pass. Instead, it resists movement. Flailing about will only cause you to sink deeper. But slowly gets you safely to shore. It’s no accident that each episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood opens with a shot of a traffic light flashing in yellow caution mode.”
“‘Now, you know prayer is asking for something, and sometimes you get a yes answer and sometimes you get a no answer,’ he carefully explained. ‘And just like anything else you might get angry when you get a no answer. But God respects your feelings, and God can take your anger as well as your happiness. So whatever you have to offer God through prayer—it seems to me—is a great gift. Because the thing God wants most of all is a relationship with you, yeah, even as a child—especially as a child. Look how Jesus loved the children who came around Him,’ he told her.”
“‘Almost everybody gets angry once in a while, and certainly I do. There are times when maybe a light will go out, you know, or the microphone will go off, or something might happen at home. But do you know what I do when I’m angry? I like to swim, and so I swim extra hard when I’m angry. And also when I was a little boy, about five years old, I learned that I could go to the piano and play real hard on the piano, and that helped me; it really did. There are many things that you can do when you’re angry that don’t hurt you or anybody else.’”
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024I loved this book! Not only did it give me a chance to relive some childhood memories with a heart of gratitude, it provided insight for how every Christian can preach the gospel without words. Mister Rogers legacy remains because of the simple convictions and the glory that lay before him. I was also so deeply moved and happy to learn that he and Henri Nouwen were dear friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2021I'm compelled to review this book. In fact, I bought and read the book because of a scathing review left by another reader. I felt so awful for the author that I wanted to support her. I was also rather surprised by the reviewer's statement to be a Christian, because you see, I'm a Christian too, and we all get judged when when our fellow Christians speak. Most importantly though, to my way of thinking, our Christ gets judged too, and He is our ultimate role model for unconditional love and inclusivity. The irony, to me, was the unloving tone of the review, while at the same time, proclaiming Mr. Roger's unconditional love. To be fair, I was very impressed by the reviewer's deep knowledge of Mr. Rogers and his inclusivity of all people regardless of race, gender, creed, or personality.
Now, to review the book itself, "Insights by Mr. Rogers." "Insights" by definition means to gain internal perspective, so I felt the title of the book pretty much gives it's purpose away. I found this book beautifully written, and a pleasure to read. I loved the author's take on Mr. Rogers' beliefs, applied through his actions for all the world to see, and then applied (or attempted...as we all struggle with these noble things) in the author's own life. Honestly, I think Mr. Rogers would be humbly proud (an oxymoron, I know...sorry) to know that the author of this book was so profoundly impacted by his influence that she lives her own life hoping to emulate his... one of loving, teaching, and serving others.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025It’s ok, and its short . I learned a lot about MR. Rodger’s I never knew. Worth a quick read
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025This used book was just as they said. I was happy with this purchase and place.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2020I absolutely loved this book! I have been fascinated with Mr. Rogers and his ideals since watching Beautiful day and the fascination grew when my Pastor spoke a sermon on him. Fred Rogers makes me feel ok to be me. I am often childlike and an goofy and silly and like childish activities and now I see that it’s a gift to cherish. It makes me a better mother and I relate with children. I have been digging deep in my faith and his words feed my soul. I am going to go to school for special education and I am going to have my room Mr. Rogers themed and teach and love as he did and share his wisdom! This book was beautifully written and you can feel their love through friendship and spiritual connection! It’s a must read. I read it in one day and I will read it again one day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Won't you be my neighbour..
I love Mr. Rogers, I feel he is such an inspiration and I have benefited greatly by reading his material and this book. I could always see his Christian virtues shine through in his television program and for that reason I decided to read this book to learn a little bit more about Mr. Rogers. I cried, I smiled, I laughed while reading this book because it brought out such wonderful truths. It is my hope that each person who reads this book can incorporate some of what Mister Rogers valued and believed into their own lives because the lessons he taught on the neighbourhood are lessons we adults still need as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden
The Author has done exactly what was intended she rendered golden !
Her capacity to bring so much her own experience with Fred and the quality of her writing exceeded my expectations. I am a big fan of A certain friend that Fred Rogers was close to. I won’t give it away but it makes so much sense. Well done with the deposit.
