Editorial Reviews
Review
'There is a powerful moral mission at the core of 'Thinking Reading' to ensure that no child leaves school unable to read. From the start of this important book, readers know they are in the hands of experts who can bridge the gap between extensive research and what we can do as teachers and leaders in our school contexts. We are left both informed and inspired to move beyond superficial quick fixes to reading. Essential reading for anyone involved in education' --Jamie Thom, English teacher, author 'Slow Teaching'
This book combines passion and pragmatism - it makes a compelling case that with the right approach all pupils can be successful in reading and then lays out practical steps that can help ensure teachers achieve that end. It will be a useful and motivating guide for all teachers. --Doug Lemov, author (Teach Like a Champion, Reading Reconsidered, Practice Perfect), MD at Uncommon Schools.
I love this book! It is a call to arms to any secondary teacher who wishes to empower their students through effective reading instruction. The authors have combined a vast catalogue of research with clear, practical classroom application, employing empirically supported strategies to offer teachers a 'best bet' in helping students learn to read with proficiency and pleasure. --Claire Hill, head of English
James and Dianne Murphy bring together research and teaching experience to address reading difficulties in secondary school. Secondary reading is a much neglected topic and there is rising awareness that appropriate strategies and resources are sorely needed. The book fills this gap and is essential reading for any secondary teacher who is concerned about their pupils' reading abilities but does not feel equipped to support them.' Dr Jessie Ricketts, Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology, Royal Holloway, University of London

- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2019While everyone else argues over the best way to teach the youngest students how to read, James and Dianne Murphy focus on a severely under-reported issue that deserves the same attention--middle and high school students who lack an adequate ability to read. The book is grounded in evidence-based practices and discusses the unique needs of this age group that teachers should consider when developing interventions. All secondary reading/ELA teachers should place this on their must-read list.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019This book gave me guidance on enhancing my teaching of reading. I wish there were clearer strategies to.help.me and other teachers of English.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018If you need to find motivation for helping students read in spite of the present level of interest and ability, this is the book you MUST read. Simply inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023This was a quick read with some strong facts and evidence. However, I had been hoping for more specific strategies or recommended programs.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2022Millions of children in the United States leave elementary school as poor readers. They are unlikely to catch up without a change in teacher knowledge and practice about what they need, and leaders who will make sure these things can happen. READ THIS BOOK. Society depends on literate citizens who can find shared knowledge and shared understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2021After writing my book, “Failing Students or Failing Schools? A Parents Guide to Reading Instruction and Intervention,” parents and teachers asked me if I could write a book about reading at the secondary level. Although I had plenty of experience with struggling readers of all ages, secondary education is outside of my wheelhouse. After reading “Thinking Reading,” I finally have a book that I can wholeheartedly recommend that is written in plain English for anyone who wants to learn about adolescent literacy. This book offers a nice balance of research and practical solutions. It’s also a quick read - I’m not one for fillers and fluff. This concise book is packed with information! I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and practical
This is a thought-provoking book about young people who have reached secondary school and are unable to read fluently, and about what teachers and school leaders can do to help improve attainment, confidence and life-chances.I especially like the policy section, where the Murphys advocate for development of reading skills as a high priority in every subject; at risk students to be systematically identified; students to be withdrawn from any subject for reading intervention; and an unwavering determination that all students leave school as fluent readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Secondary School Leaders
This is an important book. All secondary school leaders should read it, and not only those responsible for English or special needs. It is practical, challenging, based on experience and strong on evidence. It is a passionate plea for the best teaching for all pupils who arrive in secondary school without the literacy skills they need to benefit from the curriculum.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scaremongering without solutions
This terrified me - some of the stats bringing me near to tears - but it was clear by the last third that what I was actually reading was a massive advert. This will provide you with all the problems, but you’ll have to part with a significantly greater sum to get any of the answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannot recommended this book highly enough
Cannot recommended this book highly enough. James and Dianne Murphy present an intelligent, powerful and research-evidenced call for the illiteracy/semi literacy of thousands of students to end. The book is full of wisdom, years of experience and observation compressed into an analysis of why education has paid insufficient attention to assessment and teaching of struggling secondary students.
