One of the best books about teaching I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
5 out of 5 stars
One of the best books about teaching I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
Mielke's book is a must-read for anyone looking to reignite their passion in the classroom. It is inspirational, accessible, and practical. From tips that can be used in a classroom the day after reading about them to philosophical mindsets that can be adopted and developed over the course of a school year and beyond, the book is full of useful and insightful tools for anyone who wants to fall back in love with the profession. Mielke's years of experience and personal examples from his own time in the field serve as examples that anyone can relate to or learn from. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Mielke's text is a game-changer.

In my 20 years of devouring educational books, I have never wiped away a tear so I could see a research reference clearly enough to circle it so I would remember to look it up later. This book is so well written - grounded in real science and shared in such a relatable way. I finished each chapter with new tools to be a better person, teacher, and parent. Whether you are struggling to feel connected to your calling to be a teacher or not, this is a fabulous read.

    Excellent read!!
  • Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021
I have never written a review for a book before (other than for school) and I just finished reading the last page…so that should be an indication of how beneficial I feel this book is!

I had to read this book as a required reading for a course about Learning to Love Teaching Again. After teaching 21 Kindergarteners remotely until February and then switching to then hybrid, where they were in person and on the computer simultaneously for the remainder of the year…needless to say I was feeling desperate. However, I really had little to no expectations of this book helping or even enjoying it.

The Burnout Cure turned out to be exactly what I needed after a year of uncertainty, frustration and self-doubt that came with teaching Kindergarten during a pandemic. I read the entire thing cover to cover (only getting up to walk our retired greyhound, Ben) over the course of a few hours!

This book resonated things within me that I had known deep down, but brought them to light again! Some references too me back to a positive psychology class I took in college, and it made me oddly nostalgic to see Ed Diener’s work referenced multiple times. He was one of my professors who I still admire, so many years later.

Anyways, I digress, this was my 12th year teaching (3 years in 4th grade, and 9 years in Kindergarten), and it was like nothing I’ve experienced before. I’m sure any teacher who taught this past school
year can relate. It felt like we were “building the plane while trying to fly it” all at the same time. Trying to completely revamp everything you used to do in the classroom, to make it work over the computer, was far more taxing than anything I have ever experienced (and hopefully it stays that way).

So I really started feeling like my love for teaching was perhaps gone forever after this year. Even though my students astonished me with their adaptability and perseverance, I felt like I had nothing left to give and nobody even cared.

However, I now feel inspired, motivated and hopeful not only about teaching in the fall but this inspiration spreading to other areas of my life!

Thank you Chase for creating this book. I’m sure this was a giant leap of faith for you to put yourself out there as an author and it truly paid off. I’m positive that you made many sacrifices along the way for this book and I am very grateful for all of your time, effort and perseverance needed to write, edit and publish this! Thank you for your encouraging words rooted in research (although it was so well written, it didn’t feel “academic”)!

This is only the second book from all of my undergraduate and two masters degrees that I will happily choose to reread again! I will also be recommending this to other friends and colleagues!

Even though it is geared towards the teaching profession, the points he makes and the idea's that he shares could make a big difference for anyone who has to deal with the public which is pretty much everyone !
