What motivates us to learn?

We all want our students to be engaged learners, but we often struggle with getting them excited about and responsible for their own learning.

In Engaging Children, Ellin Oliver Keene explores the question: What can we do to help students develop internal motivation or, better yet, engagement? Differentiating between compliance, participation, motivation, and engagement, she shows how to develop and recognize true student engagement in your classroom and help students take more responsibility for their learning.

Explore the conditions where student-driven engagement flourishes.

As a teacher, instructional coach, or principal you will learn to cultivate an environment for increasing student engagement. You will also explore four pillars of engagement that provide a framework for considering what it means to be engaged:

  • Intellectual urgency: The compelling drive we experience when we choose to invest time and effort in learning; using questions to propel our learning forward.
  • Emotional resonance: The ability to describe when a concept is imprinted on our mind and our heart; experiencing a strong emotional connection to what we learn or read.
  • Perspective bending: An awareness of how others’ knowledge, emotions, and beliefs shape our own; adjusting our thinking when challenged and relishing the opportunity to impact others with our ideas.
  • The aesthetic world: A recognition of moments when we find something uniquely beautiful, captivating, hilarious, or meaningful; discussing a book, an illustration, a painting, or an idea that seems to have been created just for us.

Truly engaged children are more likely to remember and reapply what they learn. Engagement provides authentic motivation for students and helps them become citizens who act on their learning for the betterment of the world. With Ellin’s guidance, you’ll discover how to help all children uncover their drive for deeper learning.

I have long been waiting for a professional book that addressed engagement in a way that did this important topic justice. I knew the moment I opened Ellin Keene's beautiful new book, Engaging Children, that this was the book that I had been waiting for all these years. Ellin doesn't just talk about engagement; she shares the research base for engagement and then shows us how to bring engagement to life where it matters most - with students. This book will change the way teachers view the teacher's and student's role in the engagement process as teachers lay the foundation while giving students room to put it into action both instructionally and emotionally. Without engagement, students are merely in a state of "doing" but Engaging Children will help teachers view engagement through a powerful process of "becoming." This is a definitely a must have book for every teacher!

While this book did get me thinking, I wish it gave more implicit ways to get the students engaged in daily lessons.
The Good- She really got into debt about what engagement is. Discusses what students need in order to be engaged successfully and what engagement is not.
The Bad- I think teachers are really looking for exact ideas on how to do this in the classroom instead of reading a book and having to think again, "how will I do this in my reading/writing/math lesson today?"

Engaging Children: Igniting a Drive for Deeper Learning K-8 is classic Ellin Oliver Keene, in that she has taken an amorphous, but critical concept— in this case, engagement—and put it under the microscope. As she has done in the past with comprehension and understanding, Ellin moves us ever forward in learning how to learn.

Engagement is a term teachers use everyday. Ellin Keene asks, what does it really mean? If this is something we know is critical to learning, we must take the time to explore it ourselves. What are the conditions necessary for engagement? What are the pillars that support engagement? And most importantly, how do we move students toward the understanding that engagement is not only a worthy pursuit, but completely under their own control?

Ellin Keene does it again. Ellin brilliantly spells out the many features of engaging learning as well as what it is NOT! Powerful connections between instruction and emotions that have been untapped because we have not included students or the research on engagement. I am still fascinated by the difference between "doing" and "becoming" because this also promotes life-long learning! You don't just want this book; you NEED this book!

It had a lot of good points but it was not an easy read. I also think it mostly applies to reading teachers and wish this had been indicated. I teach all subjects and would have loved to have ideas that are applicable to math.
