Review
I don't usually tell people that there is a book they absolutely-must-no-questions-HAVE-TO-without-a-doubt read. But this one? How shall I put this? If I could choose only one book for my kids to read this year, this would be it. How's that for a recommendation? Go get it! Officially our favorite read-aloud ever. I'm recommending this to everyone who happens to lend me their ear for 5 seconds. From the Read-Aloud Revival to S.D. A hero story, this is more Hobbit than Watership Down. More Narnia than Beatrix Potter.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2025I'm reading this book aloud at our homeschool co-op and it's fantastic. The kids are so engaged. It's activating their critical thinking skills. They have such great questions, connections, and observations. Which is the sign of a really well written book. I have kids ages 4-14 and they are all loving it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2025Much more well written than many children’s books-beautiful writing and wonderful characters, wrestling with big themes. I enjoyed it as much as my kids (ages 7 and 9).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2015I picked up this book Feb 12th, 2015 for FREE on Kindle. I think I was just browsing the free kids book section when I found it. I decided to read it soon and not put it on the back shelf with the hundreds of other books on my to read list on Goodreads. I am so glad I did.
I liked it so much I want a hardback copy.... not paperback... even though I have it for all time on my kindle. It is a book I want to read and pass down to others.
4th grade and up should be able to read it easily, maybe even third, but it is GREAT for the whole family, and would be especially great as a family read aloud. I very strongly recommended it to lovers of fantasy and furry animals everywhere... in fact read it even if you don't usually like those kinds of books. This book may turn you into a lover of these types of books... it is THAT good. I have recommended it to my kids, though they are all 18 yrs. or above now, and I will recommend it to all my Goodreads friends as well as my friends on Facebook.
The Green Ember is about two rabbits, Heather and Picket (brother and sister), who find themselves caught up in the struggle of good vs. evil. The characters have a lot of depth and are thrown into an unexpected and big adventure against long odds. They meet many friends, some long lost family and some enemies along the way. There is danger, betrayal and frequent pitfalls of some sort or another. Fighting forces die and there are many battles... but there is also hope. There are heroic deeds, loyalty, trust and wisdom given out; especially from the older animals to the younger. It is a tender story, fun, adventurous, mysterious, and surprising. It is a beautiful story, sad at times, but really wonderful.
It certainly holds your attention and you will hear many pleas to keep reading and don't stop if you are reading it aloud to your children. It is not Christian but has good values and is very well written. I would compare it to the Redwall series and like it as well as those books and it has some hints of influence from Tolkien and C.S. Lewis as well. I loved the map in the front as well and the illustrations are wonderfully done.
The story really does not end as S.D. Smith is already planning a sequel and I can't wait!!! I hope he hurries up and writes fast!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019This is a book that I read aloud to my son, who is 9. I enjoy reading stories out loud to my little ones, especially when the story is good. With "The Green Ember," I felt like I was reading an adventure that both my son and I got to participate in.
There are many stories which capitalize on anthropomorphism, and this is one of them. What sets this story apart from many of the others is its level of excellence. The writing is very good, the plot is interesting, the characters are (mostly) charming.
I got a great sense of King Arthur in this book. Having that sense of a story I already know lends to familiarity, even though I have never read this book before. Sometimes, when starting a new series, there's uncertainty for a reader (or listener). There's a kind of almost-worry that it won't be as good as other things you've read, or that you just won't enjoy it. I happen to adore King Arthur stories, and so having that sense of Camelot in "The Green Ember" made me feel immediately positive and hopeful.
My son and I found ourselves looking forward to story-time every single day, eager to hear about what happens next with this incredible cast. Heather, the older sister, is a very strong and capable young rabbit. She is brave and noble. My son described her as a queen - and I have to agree. The way she comports herself is quite regal. Effortlessly so, in many cases. She is, quite frankly, good personified.
Picket, the younger brother, is so, so relatable, especially to a young boy. He is frustrated by his small size, by his youth. He is afraid and not sure what to do or where to go next, but angry that he is forced to be dependent upon others who don't always consider him or his wishes. It is difficult to be young, in many ways. How much more so when there is a war going on and nobody seems to think you have anything to offer the world, the country, or even your own family? Unable to bear this, Picket makes bold decisions to prove himself - to both himself and those around him. As a result, he does incredible things and learns to move beyond his anger to be more accepting of himself and others.
This story is about loyalty, bravery, friendship, honor, trust, and making good decisions, even when it's difficult. Maybe even especially when it's difficult. And these are all very valuable lessons for a child.
"The Green Ember" is the first in a series. It ends on an incredibly high note, encouraging readers to immediately pick up the second book and continue the journey.
I highly recommend this for readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids loved it!
And I did too, if I'm being honest. We enjoyed reading it together and are looking forward to the rest of the series. Wonderful characters and gripping story that kept my oldest (5 & 6 years old) fascinated til the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by a 10-year-old
This review has been written by my 10-year-old daughter.
This book is about two rabbits who are separated from their family and have to fight evil.
One of the things I love the most about The Green Ember series, is that even though the story is about good vs evil, it isn't like most books where good wins every time. I find books where that happens, very boring and unrealistic.
I can't pick a favourite character as they are all amazing. They are strong, caring, and loyal, and they inspire me to be more like them.
I would definitely recommend this book series to anyone aged 6 and above.
His books are very well-written and I couldn't put them down because each chapter keeps you hooked.
Me and my little sister have read these books and listened to them on Audible lots of times and we both absolutely love them. S.D.Smith is one of our favourite authors and we can't wait for his next book to come out.
I've read hundreds of books and personally, I'm convinced that these stories are some of the absolute BEST in history and will become just as well loved as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
Thanks S.D.Smith for writing these FABULOUS books and inspiring me to become a writer.
