Editorial Reviews
Review
"I must say, I am duly impressed. This book gives the kind of ‘hands-on’ support classroom teachers and curriculum committees really need in doing the work of ‘unpacking’ the standards and interpreting those standards into curriculum documents. The very detailed, complete discussions of the standards and the breakdowns that the Burke does are, in my opinion, exemplary . . . Well done!"
-- Joe Crawford, Author of Aligning Your Curriculum to the Common Core State Standards"Fundamentally different from other Common Core books, The Common Core Companion is s a user’s guide designed by a teacher who actually uses the standards in his daily work with students. Jim Burke gently demystifies the Common Core State Standards and offers a practical tool for curricular alignment. I think you will find The Common Core Companion helps schools help themselves." -- Carol Jago, Member
"I love what Jim Burke has done to make the Standards less threatening and more useful for teachers. In particular, the indicators for what students and teachers should be doing, given the Standard, are extremely helpful; as are such a clear glossary and illuminating examples. All in all, The Common Core Companion is bound to be enormously useful and thus dog-eared!" -- Grant Wiggins, President
"I have never read a book for teachers so well laid out and highly useful. I predict administrators across the country will purchase this book for their secondary teachers to use in their staff meetings, individual department meetings, their PLCs, and for individual teachers to use as Burke puts it as ‘a personal compass to navigate the complexities of the Common Core Curriculum.’"
-- Debbie Silver, Ed.D., Author of Drumming to the Beat Different Marchers and Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8"The subtitle for this guide, ′What They Say, What They Mean, How to Teach Them′ clearly defines the purpose of this outstanding resource. Utilizing a simple, consistent, and easy-to-read layout, the guide is divided into sections focusing on Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language."

- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2014If I ever host another student teacher again, this is the book that I would make sure to require them to use for their lesson planning verbiage.
Overall, this contains great ideas, and has all core subjects making the cross curricular approaches a bit more manageable.
I will get great use from this book.
UPDATE: 3/19/2015
I just ordered this again. the woman that I share my classroom with loved this book so much that I gave her mine and then ordered a new one for myself. Yes. It was worth buying twice. Yes. It was worth sharing. I do wish the price tag was a bit lower, but this book is really worth it. :)

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019This is a great resource! It gives an overview of each standard, what the students will need to know, what they will need to produce, and how the student will demonstrate understanding. The book also gives instructional steps for the standards. Basically each of the standards is unpacked for you. It's a great tool for generating ideas and saving time with breaking down the standards.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2015The ideal go-to-guide for teachers to truly understand the language and intentions of the Common Core Standards, this resource "unpacks" the Standards from both the teacher and student perspectives. Explanations of the academic vocabulary of the Standards and suggestions for approaching each make this the ultimate resource for truly understanding the expectations of the Common Core. I've used it as a guide in creating standards-based lessons and assessments, as well as in professional development workshops. The side-by-side format of ELA and History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Standards makes content connections easy to see. Straight-forward and easy to use -- one of the best Common Core investments I've made.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2013The book is wonderful but it only covers the English Language Arts standards. I hope they are working on a similar book for the Mathematical Standards which is what I wanted help with. I preordered it without a full description assuming that Common Core Companion would actually cover ALL the Common Core standards. If you want help with the English Language Arts standards (ELAS)for any academic subject, it's a wonderful book.
I really want to give it 3 stars because I'm so disapointed but its coverage of the ELAS is 5 star. I averaged.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2013Burke provides a different layout for looking at the standards, which includes the literacy standards for content areas. In addition to this, he rewords the standards in student friendly language (the "gist") and provides detailed descriptions of what both students and teachers need to do in order to meet the standards. Burke also includes academic vocabulary for each standard. This will be a useful tool for both the teachers and the administrators in my high school.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2014We are using this as the basis of a professional learning community (PLC) at my school, and we have been very pleased with this book. We like how Burke explains the Common Core standards in language that everyone can understand--that aspect has been particularly helpful to those of us who are not English Language Arts but find ourselves needing to teach specific reading and writing skills. Burke gives examples and suggestions, as well. The book is extremely easy to use, as are all of Burke's books, and they're useful for extensive study and quick reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2015If you are a teacher of 9-12 grade ELA or Social Studies, then this Common Core guide is for you. It breaks down what the standards are, what they look like when teaching them (helps with planning) and what the students should be demonstrating (performance/skills). This guide will be with me all the way through the coming school year as I overhaul old lessons into those with a higher level of critical thinking.
