Purchase options and add-ons
Ensure students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of learning during a school year
Renowned literacy experts Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey work with John Hattie to apply his 15 years of research, identifying instructional routines that have the biggest impact on student learning, to literacy practices. These practices are "visible" because their purpose is clear, they are implemented at the right moment in a student’s learning, and their effect is tangible.
Through dozens of classroom scenarios, learn how to use the right approach at the right time for surface, deep, and transfer learning and which routines are most effective at each phase of learning.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe chapters in the book focus on surface learning, deep learning, and transfer, and how to help students in each type of learning. The chapters, Laying the Groundwork for Visible Learning for Literacy, Surface Literacy Learning, Deep Literacy Learning, Teaching Literacy for Transfer and Determining Impact, Responding When the Impact Is Insufficient, and Knowing What Does Not Work are laid out clearly, giving specific examples of what teachers can do. The book also gives examples of how to determine if your strategies are working, using progress monitoring, screening students, etc. I also liked that in addition to providing examples of beneficial strategies (or what teachers should do), the authors point out common strategies that don’t increase student achievement.
One of my favorite parts of this book is the addition of the effect size of each strategy, which is listed in the margins. When looking at how our instructional decisions impact students, this is a great way to open the conversation or look deeply at data-based decision making. Though effect size should not be the primary rationale for choosing a strategy, I found the addition interesting.
I feel that this book is a good resource for educators looking to increase their knowledge of instructional strategies and their efficacy. The video links, through QR codes, and websites would also be helpful for teachers. Overall, the book is more technical and “textbook-like,” but gives a wealth of information. The book could also be helpful for literacy coaches as they work with teachers to determine how and why a strategy is effective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Très détaillé et directement utilisable en classe

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is an accurate, intelligent and practical guide to teaching English to the highest standard. It encompasses everything a non-specialist needs to know and is highly transferable to all other areas of the curriculum. It also helps teachers really see what visible learning means and makes real applications for it all. It's attention to research is exemplary, and makes brilliant distinctions for the different stages of learning, which we may have met in Blooms or SOLO, but not fully assimilated. My only criticism is that some of the videos I have watched so far don't quite hit the mark for me.
