From the Inside Flap
Achieve classroom greatness with updated Champion techniques
Teaching is one of the most important jobs in the world and often one of the hardest. Excellent teachers continually strive to learn and improve their craft, and no matter how good a teacher is, there's always room for improvement. Teach Like a Champion became a global bestseller because it offered concrete, engaging, easy-to-implement techniques teachers could use to keep their students engaged, focused, and learning. Teach Like a Champion 2.0 compiles the feedback gathered from real teachers in real classrooms around the world to deliver an updated set of techniques, made even more effective by the continual fine-tuning of daily classroom use. Effective and informative for both new teachers and classroom veterans, Teach Like a Champion 2.0 describes how to:
- ADJUST CLASSIC TEACHING TECHNIQUES TO BE EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE
- IMPLEMENT ENTIRELY NEW TECHNIQUES THAT KEEP STUDENTS ON TRACK
- TRANSLATE THEORY INTO ACTION WITH VIDEO DEMONSTRATIONS
Teach Like a Champion 2.0 made me a better teacher. The rigor, depth, and applicability of each technique Doug shares immediately allowed me to improve the teaching I do with school leaders, teachers, and kids. TLaC 2.0 builds seamlessly from the first edition--going deeper on some key concepts and introducing us to a host of new methods.
--Dave Levin, cofounder, KIPP
Like the fantastic teachers who have informed this book, author Doug Lemov is never satisfied and is constantly pushing himself and others to a higher and higher level. Teach Like a Champion 2.0 is a must-read for those in pursuit of ensuring their students learn at the highest levels, including those who read Doug's first amazing book!
--Wendy Kopp, founder, Teach For America; chief executive officer and cofounder, Teach For All
I love two things about Doug Lemov and the Uncommon Schools team: a relentless focus on student learning, and a dedication to the proposition that the best professional development occurs when teachers learn from teachers. The pages of Teach Like a Champion 2.0 are imbued with both ideals.
--Daniel T. Willingham, author, Why Don't Students Like School? and When Can You Trust the Experts?

About the author

Teachers do the most important work in society (IMO). They do it with little fanfare--often in the face of immense challenge. And though many of them do it with incredible skill they rarely get studied.
That's what I try to do: watch great teachers and describe what they do that makes them a little different.
Teach Like a Champion--which is now completely revised in a much improved version called Teach Like Champion 2.0 that I recommend over the original version--is my most popular book. It's got twelve chapters about every facet of teaching. And be sure to also check out the companion workbook, the Teach Like a Champion Field Guide 2.0, which is chockful of hands-on activities and includes brand new video content.
Practice Perfect, written with my colleagues Erica Woolway and Katie Yezzi, is a meditation on preparing and developing teachers--and others--through practice. Teaching is a performance profession. You do it live. That observation is what got us started in writing the book.
My newest book is Reading Reconsidered--a look at the toughest and most critical part of teaching: literacy. It's written with Erica Woolway and Colleen Driggs and I'm so happy to have had the chance ot work with co-authors with such knowledge and insight.
I should note that I see all of my books as being about tools, not systems. Teaching is a problem-solving endeavor. You use tools, adapt them to the setting and context of your classroom and your personal style. You like some and not others. I believe most of all in the problem solving skills of teachers and offer them tools for that, knowing they will find the best way to apply, adapt, even ignore some of the ideas in my books.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2020A seminal text. While perhaps best known by for its behavior management strategies, I’ve learned in my 10+ years as a public school educator that its greatest value comes with its treatment of higher level topics. To name a few: increasing “thinking ratio,” *effectively* checking for student understanding (at each stage of the lesson - not just as the end!), creating a positive “culture of error,” “excavating” error (to help students learn from common misconceptions), teaching the “art of the sentence,” and the list goes on. As a teacher and school leader, I’ve seen countless teachers rely upon the concepts and shared language this text provides on their way to becoming dynamic, engaging, highly- effective teachers. Thanks goodness for this book.
P.S. For white people (like myself) who teach majority people of color, I believe it’s important to pair TLAC - and others that are similar - with texts that offer invaluable cultural context. Books like “How to Be an Antiracist” (Kendi), “White Fragility” (Denagelo), and “For White Folks...” (Emdin). No one book should ever be considered the end-all-be-all, especially for white folks who need to be extra thoughtful about the impact of their words and actions on their students.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2024There are many good techniques in this book. Not every technique is for everyone, but the purpose and success of books such as these are their ability to offer you many ways to succeed. Everyone teaches differently, but we do need to meet in the middle. This book explores those options while remaining aware and open minded.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2016A lot of education books leave me wanting for something tangible. This book describes a series of techniques that teachers can employ in the classroom in order to address issues and to promote learning. It is relatively pleasant to read. I think that this is a resource that I will revisit as a teacher and I have found it to be valuable as a student. I recommend this book to anyone who hopes to be an effective teacher.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2015Lemov's book can be truly transformational for teachers and schools. We use his first volume (TLAC 1.0) extensively in my public school as part of our professional development, and, although many of his techniques aren't earthshattering to veteran educators, his book codifies and names the technique in a way that makes it really easy for a school to develop shorthand around them. It also lays out the reasoning behind many of the things good teachers do already. I cannot imagine any school, coach, or professional developer who isn't using TLAC--it will make your job easier, I promise.
This second volume is definitely worth a purchase, even if you already have the first TLAC. Lemov is a workaholic, as evidenced by his frequent blog updates, and he has an insatiable curiosity to figure out what works in education. This book reflects both qualities, as he incorporates extensive revision and feedback from teachers to his original techniques as well as adds new ones. Although in general, I believe the charter school movement misguided and extremely problematic for the state of public education in our country, there is no denying that much innovation has come from some of the good charter networks. TLAC is a great example of this!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020If you've had to suffer through the drivel presented in most education books - forced by an administrator or edumacation professor to read Wong's "The First Days of School" and similar content-free pablum, try Doug Lemov's book. It's packed with solution-driven examples gleaned from observing thousands of teachers and picking the most effective classroom strategies. The adult-level writing is truly refreshing. This is a book not just for the first week or first year, but one to be referred to throughout a career.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2015I read Teach Like A Champion and thought wow, inspiring and that there could not be another book that is as inspiring as this. Then I read Teach Like A Champion 2.0 and was literally blown away. The techniques are amazing. They can be used in a variety of classrooms and can be carried out by any kind of teacher (tenured and/or nontenured) The explanations are explicit and understandable. The DVD provides an accurate picture of what the technique looks like when successfully implemented in the classroom. The chapters are informative, inspiring and well written. The book focuses on the year throughout, not just the beginning or the end of the year! I would recommend this book to any of my colleagues! A great book to cetner a professional development around and a must have for your own personal professional collection!

Tris book is a great tool for both teachers who are at the beginning of their career and more experienced teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best education books I've read
Teach Like A Champion 2.0 is one of the finest books about education I've ever read, and I usually dislike books about education.
The central contention of Lemov's research is that veteran teachers are a critical source of professional knowledge. This expertise is not developed by reading books of theory; it is gained through decades of work in the classroom by dedicated, practical and thoughtful K-12 teachers who have little interest in escaping from their students. Lemov's research is based on observing and systematizing their work, and his summary is an outstanding example of classroom-based research.
Some people will, of course, despise the book. I've seen many education professors on social media twist themselves into knots over TLAC. The idea that front-line practitioners are a better source than professors for good professional instruction is a profound threat, and it shows. Certain activists who believe that political philosophy must equal educational philosophy are also suspicious of the book, though most have apparently not read it. For them, a concept like classroom management must necessarily be code for domination and compliance, despite classroom management being an essential skill for any teacher who aspires to a successful career.
I completed a Master's degree in philosophy, and yet I've never seen education as a philosophical or theoretical exercise. If it exists, educational theory must grow out of practice; theory must not drive the bus. As such, TLAC is a breath of fresh air. I read it 26 years into my public school career, and it was a revelation to see clarity and insight brought to processes I have worked on all my career. In my opinion, it's an essential read for all new teachers. For veterans, Lemov's book will significantly refine your professional skills.
If you're serious about classroom teaching, you owe it to yourself to read Teach Like A Champion 2.0.

5.0 out of 5 stars Você pode aprender mais com esse livro do que na faculdade
