The Timeless Novel About a Bus Ride from Hell to Heaven

In The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis again employs his formidable talent for fable and allegory. The writer finds himself in Hell boarding a bus bound for Heaven. The amazing opportunity is that anyone who wants to stay in Heaven, can. This is a starting point for an extraordinary meditation upon good and evil, grace and judgment. Lewis’s revolutionary idea is the discovery that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. Using his extraordinary descriptive powers, Lewis’s The Great Divorce will change the way we think about good and evil.

Wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, The Screwtape Letters is a masterpiece of religious satire that gives an account of the underworld's foibles in our daily lives through art of temptation. Bringing together Lewis’ legendary broadcast talks during World War Two, Mere Christianity provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith. C.S. Lewis examines four types of human love-- affection, friendship, Eros, and charity-- encouraging readers to open themselves to all forms of love, which is the key to understanding that brings us closer to God. A deep dive into the question: "If God is good and all-powerful, why does he allow his creatures to suffer pain?” Approached with compassion and wisdom, Lewis; insight offers help to a world hungering for a true understanding of human nature. One of Lewis' most intimate works, A Grief Observed details his journey with grief after his wife’s tragic death, offering an honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. Told from the viewpoint of Psyche’s sister, Orual, Till We Have Faces is a brilliant examination of envy, betrayal, loss, blame, grief, guilt, and conversion.

Engaging fiction that highlights truth about the excuses we all make
I ran into a copy of this while on vacation recently and thought I'd give it a read. Wow! This is a great short read. It is a work of fiction that Lewis says is NOT intended to be an accurate description of what happens after death, but the premise is that a busload of people from hell travel up to the outskirts of heaven where they meet individuals they knew during their lifetimes who try to convince them to stay rather than get on the bus back to hell. The main narrative consists of the speaker (who was on the bus) talking with people there and overhearing conversations between those from hell and those in heaven. These conversations are a vehicle (pun intended) to highlighting all the excuses and justifications people have for not giving up their pride, self-deceit, bitterness, etc. In the end, nearly all the people from hell decide against staying in heaven because they can't bring themselves to admit that they were mistaken about either themselves or others. It is a really engaging read that brings out so much about human nature and the lies we tell ourselves, all packaging into a compelling narrative package that makes for a great read. Recommended.

So many real life examples were given & will strike chords within you as you read. Beautiful yet tragic truth, told via an adventurous adult fiction story.

Thought provoking. CS Lewis dives deep into the understanding of the human soul and free will.
He explores through examples, the small
Thinking that traps souls from truth. Clinging to their smallness, they shrink into themselves until they are swallowed up by their own blind small spirits.

Very interesting read! Lot of allegory in his writing. It really displays the inner struggle of men and women revealed in their time and through the lenses of eternity. How even in the display of truth, it is still rejected for justified reasons or habits forming altered truths.

Might we choose hell even if offered heaven? That seems to me to be the question Lewis’ The Great Divorce asks. You and I might think, “No! If the choice were clear, surely we are enlightened enough to opt for heaven!” But Lewis seems to suggest that we may feel justified in what are actually self-destructive patterns, and that we may cling to them as though they are our only hope. Read this book. It will make you think seriously about the choices you make.
