Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God Paperback – March 5, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
The most influential man to ever walk the earth has had his story told in hundreds of different ways for thousands of years. Can any more be said?
Now, Timothy Keller, New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet and the man Newsweek called a “C. S. Lewis for the twenty-first century,” unlocks new insights into the life of Jesus Christ as he explores how Jesus came as a king, but a king who had to bear the greatest burden anyone ever has. Jesus the King is Keller’s revelatory look at the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark. In it, Keller shows how the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical, and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God. It is an unforgettable look at Jesus Christ, and one that will leave an indelible imprint on every reader.

Praise for Timothy Keller and Jesus the King
"Much of Redeemer is remarkably traditional. What is not traditional is Dr. Keller's skill in speaking the language of his urbane audience . . . Observing Dr. Keller's professorial pose on stage, it is easy to understand his appeal." —The New York Times
"Fifty years from now, if . . . Christians are widely known for their love of cities, their commitment to mercy and justice, and their love of their neighbors, Tim Keller will be remembered as a pioneer of the new urban Christians." —Christianity Today
"In discussing the identity of Jesus, the author describes him as a man both deeply embedded within his culture and times while also living counter to them in many ways. . . . The author describes a man aware of his upcoming sacrifice, and indeed, a man in continual sacrifice, as he had descended from heaven to live on earth. Captivating reading from a Christian perspective." —Kirkus Reviews
"Keller engages the reader with astute pastoral application, littered with excellent sermon illustrations. . . . [Jesus the King] finds Keller in familiar territory: producing another great book, leaving readers from atheist to Christian grappling with the nature and implications of the gospel of Jesus Christ." —Michael Johnson, DesiringGod.org
"This is the book where Tim Keller hits his stride as an author. . . . Keller directs readers' gazes toward the cross and will not allow them to look away." —Collin Hansen, The Gospel Coalition

- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe C.S. Lewis of the twenty-first century? That is the statement that Newsweek so boldly proclaimed concerning Tim Keller. Nonetheless, he has lived up to the description. I first read Tim Keller when I picked up his book The Prodigal God. Since that day, I have listened to countless sermons and read countless articles by him. I quickly picked up a few of his other books Counterfeit Gods and Generous Justice. You can imagine the excitement when I picked up The King's Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus.
From the inside of the cover: "The most influential man to ever walk the earth has had his story told in hundreds of different ways for thousands of years. Can any more be said?"
The answer is absolutely. Written by a scholar with a pastor's heart, Keller looks at the life of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Mark. Masterfully written, Keller speaks to both believers and non-believers. Each step of the way, Keller is drawing us to a deeper understanding of Christ and therefore a deeper relationship.
The book is divided into two parts: The King and The Cross. In the first part of the book, Keller examines the identity of Christ through specific stories from the Gospel of Mark. He explains and applies scripture in a way that stirs the affections and produces a deeper love for Christ. The second part of the book begins to look at the mission of Jesus. Following the outline of Mark, Keller explains and examines Jesus' journey to the cross. Concluding his book, Keller explains the story of Christ can be our story too. Keller states, "It can be your story as well. God made you to love him supremely, but he lost you. He returned to get you back, but it took the cross to do it. He absorbed your darkness so that one day you can finally and dazzlingly become your true self and take your seat at his eternal feast".
As a masterful storyteller, Keller draws us deeply into every story. The story of Jesus comes alive and fresh as we journey through Mark together. The book is of tremendous value. I have already recommended it and given it to a few friends. Anyone seeking to pursue Jesus will benefit from greatly from this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTim Keller has a way of making complex ideas practical. He also has a way of taking simple truths and making it something that I have to think about for days at a time. This book did both. It put me in a place to marvel at my King and encouraged me to worship my Lord.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don't remember how I first discovered this book in the audio form. I listened to it about 2 years ago. I liked it, but it didn't leave a big impression on me.
One day while driving along with Marilyn, and looking for something to listen to that we could both enjoy, I returned to King's Cross. It was a random chapter, the one on Mark chapter 5. The way Keller tells the story of the raising from the dead of Jarius's daughter and the healing of the woman who dared to touch the garment of Jesus moved me greatly. I wondered why I hadn't loved this book more. So as I so often do when I like an audio book, I book the hardbound book as well.
I really appreciate learning more about the life of Jesus. Keller is not approaching this work as a Bible scholar, but rather as an exegesis of the words of the Gospel according to Mark with commentary related to the lives of people he has counseled, quotes from C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald and J.R.R. Tolkien. It is very devotional in nature. It is not written to debate accuracy of the record but to declare boldly that Jesus is the Christ and that because of His life and death, we can be filled with joy and hope for a resurrection of glory.
Chapter one is entitled "The Dance". Keller tries to explain one of the most fundamental Christian creeds, that of the Holy Trinity. It is a tall order. In fact, the basis of that belief is not Biblical (in my view) and is contradicted in the scriptures. As a member of the LDS Church, my belief is contrary to the Trinity and I believe in the Godhead as being composed of three distinct, separate yet perfectly unified beings. This is the only chapter that I did not thoroughly enjoy. I intend to return to this book over and again as I study the life, miracles and teachings of Jesus.
If you are discouraged or feeling skeptical about life or your circumstances in life, I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone
Whether you're still looking into the claims of Jesus or you're a seasoned follower, this book has much to offer. To the former, Tim Keller offers enough historical context and explanation to make clear sense of Jesus' identity and mission. He further makes excellent use of his skills as a Christian apologist (cf perhaps his best book 'The Reason for God') to help both seeker and Christian alike see Jesus' uniqueness with absolute clarity. To the latter, the most interesting element in this book is how Keller draws together Old Testament scripture with the material he is using from Mark's Gospel to paint a seamless picture of God's purposes from beginning to end - and moreover, these are not simply the usual links that are often made.
Above and beyond the above, this book is actually a great read. I found myself underlining and highlighting many points, not just because they were either thought-provoking or inspiring, but also because Keller writes with such clarity and self-deprecating transparency. This is certainly one of the best Christian books I have read in a long while and I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but highly opinionated and preachy
As a former Catholic looking to understand my religious roots better, I was highly disappointed with this book. Every paragraph from the scriptures is followed by several pages of “authoritative interpretation” that didn’t resonate with me at all. There are many ways to look at Jesus’s teachings, but the thread I found in this book did not make me feel more connected to Him. The author does a good job of selecting relevant passages from the Bible though.
Having studied and practiced different religious traditions over the past few years, I also did not appreciate the author repeatedly saying things like “Remember, ALL other religions are basically advice, while Christianity is this and that”.
I was looking for a more objective or analytical work, this book seemed highly preachy to me.
