First impression: One gets the sense that Columbia-trained psychologist Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson genuinely understands and respects her readers. She knows the challenges we all face and addresses them directly and compassionately, never cutting corners or dumbing things down. Each tip in "Nine Things Successful People Do Differently" takes up only two or three pages, but in that space she condenses findings from thousands of pages of scientific research in a way that feels like a fascinating, personal conversation over a good cup of coffee or tea.

The format is simple but brilliant. Each tip begins with a brief summary followed by a slightly longer set of examples that apply experimental findings to real life situations. Finally, every section ends with the book's greatest strength, "Putting It into Action," a step-by-step guide to implementing the tool and -- most importantly -- recovering from mistakes.

Now the background: For years, psychologists (including Dr. Grant Halvorson) have been rigorously studying the tools and tricks that successful people use to achieve their goals, avoid common mistakes, and maximize their potential. Even better, these scientists found that the same tools could be used by anyone and applied to a vast set of life goals -- increasing willpower, losing weight, getting a raise, exercising more, quitting smoking, and on and on.

But at the same time an entire industry of so-called self-help books, magazines, websites, and TV shows were pushing lousy ideas that actually undermined people's chances of really helping themselves. Many within the scientific community, including myself, were frustrated because we arrogantly believed our findings were too complex for a general audience.

Then came Heidi Grant Halvorson to prove us all wrong with her amazing book Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals. It was (and is) an astounding work: the writing is clear, compelling, and enjoyable. She has done the same in this short e-book.

"Nine Things" takes less than an hour to read, but its contents are good for a lifetime. It's a perfect companion (or introduction) to "Succeed." By the end, I felt a lasting burst of confidence along with a strong hope for more from this eminent psychologist and gifted author.

9 things successful people do differently by Heidi Grant Halvorson was exactly what it sounds like, a book sharing nine habits that successful people do. And while the book itself was smaller than my left hand, it packs a punch leaving readers with a lasting impression. The premise behind the book is that people don’t succeed strictly because of who they are; more often, people succeed because of what they do. And this book provides the to-do to make you a more effective person when it comes towards reaching your goals.

This book is much more concise than the other 378 page self-development encyclopedias you can find on the market. Halvorson does a solid job of presenting each habit, clarifying it, providing examples of its application and usefulness, and finally leaving the reader with a “putting it into practice” checklist. The habits themselves are universal and it is clear that anyone who implements these into their daily lives would be better off. I only had one quarrels with the book. Some of the “putting it into practice” checklists are scant. Granted some of the habits are more situational, it would have been nice to have at least a few actionable items for each habit that could be started right now.

Overall, I recommend giving Halvorson a shot. When I bought the book it was under $7 and, given the quality of the book’s content, there is no doubt this book will be a positive return on investment.

I really enjoyed this book it gave me some great insight into what I need to focus on and how to rewire my thinking. I will definitely use the strategies recommended, like it's okay to make mistakes, when you allow yourself to make mistakes you're not so anxious and stressed about being perfect. Give yourself time to grow by keeping to your goals and making small steps everyday with the If -then statements! I loved that the author mentions that success isn't easy a lot of people think things will be handed to them and that's not true in order to be successful you need to be a hard worker and will have to overcome obstacles/temptations to achieve your goals most people will give up instead of continuing to develop themselves or their skillet.

Apparently contradictory reviews aren't. If you have read similar books, such as the 7 Habits of Effective People you will think that this book is lightweight, too short and not well written. If, on the other hand, you are new to this genre you will think it is a jewel.
The problem of this book is that it relies on mediocre social science research, which in most cases present correlations as cause and effect. Such practice is often wrong because human psychology is very complex and responds to multiple causes. Also, the writer does not seem to be aware of the problem of studies with small sample size. She cites a study with Only 25 obese women who are then divided them according to their expectations of the results of a diet.
Fortunately, although the science is weak, most of what is said is obvious, as pointed out by others, so the tedous "studies show" can be just ignored.

As a leader we would like that all of our team members are as eager to learn and improve as we are. Even if that may be the case, I've found that there's a base level they need to require first that you or I may have that they need to acquire to develop a self driven autonomous state. This book is a very well written guide that is easy to understand and implement. It can help develop an aptitude for thinking analytically about the process of success. I will be buying 22 of these books for my branch employees.
