- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2015This book was fantastic. Written in a conversational style, Gallagher made reading about close reading fun and engaging; since I wasn't bored to tears reading it, I was actually inspired and found a lot of new ideas and techniques to use in my classroom - immediately, not with a lot of front planning that often comes with new ideas. I feel like if I opened the book to a random page, I'd be able to find something to use instantly in my classroom with very little tweaking. I have already used several of his ideas and had great success! The best part is that Gallagher IS a teacher - she these methods are tried and true and he shares personal anecdotes about many from his own experiences, so you can see how they played out for him. I can't share this book with my other teacher friends because: 1) I wrote ALL over it with my own ideas and connections, and 2) I can't bear to part with it! I'm definitely reading it again this summer to refresh myself for a new year starting in August! This is a must read for any reading teacher! (Plus Gallagher loves baseball and metaphors, so the entire book is VERY entertaining!!!)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2016A few of the teachers in my (English) department are working our way through this book after learning about it at an in-service a few years ago. We have been using as many ideas as possible. We are in love with it, and enjoy comparing the results of our implementation. We have found that the ideas are easily modified for junior high and high school (we teach grades 7-12), and really do engage the students in a meaningful way.I have been looking for a way to raise the rigor in my classroom without raising the amount of homework. This was the answer I was looking for! Loved it so much I bought other books by the same author. Was not disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2009I was so surprised at the number of ideas in this book that could be adapted to the lower grades! Gallagher is such a gifted writer--this would be an enlightening read for anyone involved in teaching and motivating young readers. I loved the idea of second-draft reading! Students have the idea that once is enough and this is far from beneficial if we want readers to extract deeper meaning. He includes student samples along with many lesson ideas. There are even some activities for the reader to do to get an actual feel what you will be asking your students will do. He shows the difference between assigning and teaching. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2023This book rocked my little teaching world. It's accessible, practical, and TRUE.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2014This is not just philosophy. One of my favorites for practical strategies for the classroom. For example, I use the graphing the story idea for a 10th grade unit on the Hero's Journey: I take part of an ancient hero story, have the students tell me at what level heroism occurs from 1-10, then grave each part of the story as to whether the hero acts heroically in that event. Then I have them graph an incident from their own experience (I found a huge spider in the shower, etc.) The students were very engaged. I have had similar success with other ideas from this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014Gallagher's book was very helpful for me. She not only gives the reader insight into how we as teachers can teach our students deeper reading skills, but she also gives examples of how to do so; for me, that is a huge plus. The best part about the book was that Gallagher gives lots of different times that deeper reading can be taught. This gives teachers a choice of chapters to read based on what they are trying to accomplish. Also, you can read the chapters separately depending on what you are looking for with no trouble. I would recommend this book for any teacher that is looking to help their students go the extra mile with their comprehension.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013This is an important aspect of teaching! "Deeper Reading" is frank and to the point about teaching reading to students. I teach a Criminal Justice course in the Phoenix Union High School District. Reading is an essential integral portion of my teaching and this book provides valuable tips and strategies to get your students involved and intrested in reading deeper into the subject. I've found after using these practices my students are performing better on assesssmnets not only in my classes, but also in their academic classes! Well written!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2018Great book for new teachers! It is totally out of my expectation that the contend of this book is not "serious" and "boring" at all. Actually the cover of this book is not so attractive, but the way of author's writing, how he lead me step by step to know his ideas, many examples presented are so interesting! Strongly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend for Secondary Teachers
This book is awesome! I am loving reading Gallagher's ideas about students diving deeper into reading. He has great analogies that help me understand the reading process. He also provides great practical examples to implement in your classroom. I don't teach high school English, but his book makes me think I could!
