    About the Author

Kelly, a baseballoholic and a self-described expert at negotiating airports, is in his 33rd year of teaching at the high school level. He currently teaches at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California. He believes that there is no greater pleasure than teaching someone something. Teaching is artistic, it matters a great deal, and I can never get the job down perfectly. Kelly thinks that professional development should treat teachers as such - professionals. I know in the classroom that good things happen when my students have meaningful discussions. I know as a teacher myself that my craft sharpens when I am given the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with my peers. And let's have a laugh or two while we are at it. Writing his six books for Stenhouse was a solitary experience. Though I have written outlines prior to each of my books, I have yet to follow any of them step-by-step. That is why I find writing rewarding - because the act of writing itself generates new thinking, and new thinking is always exciting.

This book was fantastic. Written in a conversational style, Gallagher made reading about close reading fun and engaging; since I wasn't bored to tears reading it, I was actually inspired and found a lot of new ideas and techniques to use in my classroom - immediately, not with a lot of front planning that often comes with new ideas. I feel like if I opened the book to a random page, I'd be able to find something to use instantly in my classroom with very little tweaking. I have already used several of his ideas and had great success! The best part is that Gallagher IS a teacher - she these methods are tried and true and he shares personal anecdotes about many from his own experiences, so you can see how they played out for him. I can't share this book with my other teacher friends because: 1) I wrote ALL over it with my own ideas and connections, and 2) I can't bear to part with it! I'm definitely reading it again this summer to refresh myself for a new year starting in August! This is a must read for any reading teacher! (Plus Gallagher loves baseball and metaphors, so the entire book is VERY entertaining!!!)

A few of the teachers in my (English) department are working our way through this book after learning about it at an in-service a few years ago. We have been using as many ideas as possible. We are in love with it, and enjoy comparing the results of our implementation. We have found that the ideas are easily modified for junior high and high school (we teach grades 7-12), and really do engage the students in a meaningful way.I have been looking for a way to raise the rigor in my classroom without raising the amount of homework. This was the answer I was looking for! Loved it so much I bought other books by the same author. Was not disappointed.

I was so surprised at the number of ideas in this book that could be adapted to the lower grades! Gallagher is such a gifted writer--this would be an enlightening read for anyone involved in teaching and motivating young readers. I loved the idea of second-draft reading! Students have the idea that once is enough and this is far from beneficial if we want readers to extract deeper meaning. He includes student samples along with many lesson ideas. There are even some activities for the reader to do to get an actual feel what you will be asking your students will do. He shows the difference between assigning and teaching. Well done!

This is not just philosophy. One of my favorites for practical strategies for the classroom. For example, I use the graphing the story idea for a 10th grade unit on the Hero's Journey: I take part of an ancient hero story, have the students tell me at what level heroism occurs from 1-10, then grave each part of the story as to whether the hero acts heroically in that event. Then I have them graph an incident from their own experience (I found a huge spider in the shower, etc.) The students were very engaged. I have had similar success with other ideas from this book.

I have been a 6th grade teacher for 33 years. This book has done more to change my way of thinking about teaching reading than anything I've ever read. My students all come to me able to read. The struggle: those students who had been turned off to the joys of reading or had never bought into the notion of reading being a pathway to knowledge, and those students who read extremely fluently and loved reading but continued to read at a surface level.

Read this book. Read it slowly. Digest it. Try out Kelly's ideas. Adapt them. Use them. You'll love the difference it makes.

Gallagher's book was very helpful for me. She not only gives the reader insight into how we as teachers can teach our students deeper reading skills, but she also gives examples of how to do so; for me, that is a huge plus. The best part about the book was that Gallagher gives lots of different times that deeper reading can be taught. This gives teachers a choice of chapters to read based on what they are trying to accomplish. Also, you can read the chapters separately depending on what you are looking for with no trouble. I would recommend this book for any teacher that is looking to help their students go the extra mile with their comprehension.

This is an important aspect of teaching! "Deeper Reading" is frank and to the point about teaching reading to students. I teach a Criminal Justice course in the Phoenix Union High School District. Reading is an essential integral portion of my teaching and this book provides valuable tips and strategies to get your students involved and intrested in reading deeper into the subject. I've found after using these practices my students are performing better on assesssmnets not only in my classes, but also in their academic classes! Well written!!

This book is awesome! I am loving reading Gallagher's ideas about students diving deeper into reading. He has great analogies that help me understand the reading process. He also provides great practical examples to implement in your classroom. I don't teach high school English, but his book makes me think I could!
