English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies that Work 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
This unique new perspective and method for teaching English Language Learners is the proven result of the author's community organizing career and his successful career in the classroom.
Written by an award-winning practitioner, English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies that Work offers educators a five-step methodology for teaching this burgeoning population. Rather than viewing these students through the typical lens of "deficits" they might have, the process helps educators recognize and use the assets ELLs bring to the classroom.
The five principles around which the process revolves are: building relationships, accessing prior knowledge through student stories, developing student leadership, learning by doing, and reflection. The book shows how these ideas can be used in all subject areas to help ELLs master both content and language using "high-order" thinking skills. In addition to providing detailed lessons, the book shares a framework teachers can use to create their own lessons, and it shows how to take advantage of technology and games as teaching tools. References to extensive research studies are included to provide evidence of effectiveness, and each lesson is linked to state standards in English Language development.

About the author

I teach English, Social Studies and International Baccalaureate classes to English Language Learners and English-proficient students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California.
I've written or edited thirteen books on education: The ELL Teacher's Toolbox (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Navigating The Common Core With English Language Learners (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Building A Community Of Self-Motivated Learners: Strategies To Help Students Thrive In School and Beyond; Classroom Management Q&As: Expert Strategies for Teaching; Self-Driven Learning: Teaching Strategies For Student Motivation; The ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers To Classroom Challenges; English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies That Work; and Building Parent Engagement In Schools (with co-author Lorie Hammond). Katie Hull and I also edited a series of books on Math, Science and Social Studies that are modeled on our ELL Teacher's Toolbox. A second edition of the ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide was recently published. The Student Motivation Handbook is my newest book.
My other writing includes a popular education blog at http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/ , a weekly teacher advice column for Education Week Teacher and a series of posts for The New York Times. My articles on education policy regularly appear in the Washington Post. In addition, my articles have appeared in publications such as ASCD Educational Leadership, Social Policy, and Language Magazine.
I've won several awards, including the Leadership For A Changing World Award from the Ford Foundation, and was the Grand Prize Winner of the International Reading Association Award for Technology and Reading.
You can check out three hundred radio show segments I've done on BAM! Education Radio.
I was a community organizer for nineteen years prior to becoming a public school teacher.
In the personal area, I'm married and have three children and four grandchildren.
A basketball team I play for has come in last place every year since 2014, so I should not give up my day job for a career in sports.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAs expected, this inspiring book for English teachers by ESL maven and award-winning education blogger Larry Ferlazzo provides practical tips for helping students become more self-directed. English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies that Work that Work shows many ways to deepen the relationship between teacher and often alienated students by encouraging them to take risks and learn from good mistakes. While principally focused on the K-12 English language learners, I have easily adapted many of the ideas and techniques to more academic ESL students in university and IEP classes. It's an outstanding book that deserves a far larger audience - beyond American English teachers. If you are looking for a savvy way to become more learner-focused and help turn sometimes passive students into autotelic learners, buy this under-appreciated book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAs an English teacher, I'm an avid follower of Larry Ferlazzo, but his blog is way more up to date. Many links mentioned in the book were dead ones - I think he needs a better format....
However, having said that, it's nice to have a physical copy where Larry gets to say more - and he's worth reading. He's brought out another book since this one, so those links' problems may be sorted out.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2010Format: PaperbackLarry Ferlazzo proposes that the best way to empower English language learners as they master English is to abandon the "deficit model" common in many schools and develop their self-efficacy and leadership skills. Definitely a must-have if you work regularly with ELLs or any group of students who tend to be treated as individuals with "deficits."
