Classroom Management Q&As: Expert Strategies for Teaching Kindle Edition
• How can I get the new school year off to a good start?
• How can I help my students develop self-control?
• How can I stop disruptive behavior in my classroom?
• How can I engage students without resorting to a carrots-and-sticks approach?
• What does true student engagement look like?
This ebook brings together the best contributions from Ferlazzo’s Education Week Teacher blog “Classroom Q&A With Larry Ferlazzo.” Ferlazzo, who teaches English, social studies, and International Baccalaureate classes to students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, Calif., offers his take on effective classroom management along with a network of leading experts. Together, they provide the strategy-based answers that get to the heart of high-quality instruction.
Critical Acclaim for Classroom Q&As:
"Lots of people have answers in education, but no one has all the answers. Larry Ferlazzo knows this better than anyone. That’s why his 'Classroom Q&A' blog, a go-to source for educators, features such a diverse group of contributors. In Classroom Management Q&A’s, Expert Strategies for Teaching, Ferlazzo gathers experts, authors, administrators, and star teachers in one place and lets them answer teachers’ most pressing classroom management questions. The result is a series of helpful pieces that are short enough to read at lunch or even between periods."
--Roxanna Elden, NBCT, speaker, and author of See Me After Class: Advice for Teachers by Teachers
"Instead of trusting your best instincts in the moment, wouldn’t it be great if you could hit “pause” and enlist the advice of trusted colleagues?... The conversational tone, peppered with personal reflections from Ferlazzo, makes for quick but rewarding reading. I can imagine teachers dipping into these digital pages repeatedly, picking up a gem or two of advice to improve their practice. The book also lends itself to staff discussions. Many of the questions—How can I connect with disengaged students? Can teachers be friends with students?—set the stage for reflective conversations about teaching and learning."
-- Suzie Boss, education writer, project-based learning advocate, and author of Bringing Innovation to School: Empowering Students to Thrive in a Changing World.

About the author

I teach English, Social Studies and International Baccalaureate classes to English Language Learners and English-proficient students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California.
I've written or edited thirteen books on education: The ELL Teacher's Toolbox (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Navigating The Common Core With English Language Learners (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Building A Community Of Self-Motivated Learners: Strategies To Help Students Thrive In School and Beyond; Classroom Management Q&As: Expert Strategies for Teaching; Self-Driven Learning: Teaching Strategies For Student Motivation; The ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski); Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers To Classroom Challenges; English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies That Work; and Building Parent Engagement In Schools (with co-author Lorie Hammond). Katie Hull and I also edited a series of books on Math, Science and Social Studies that are modeled on our ELL Teacher's Toolbox. A second edition of the ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide was recently published. The Student Motivation Handbook is my newest book.
My other writing includes a popular education blog at http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/ , a weekly teacher advice column for Education Week Teacher and a series of posts for The New York Times. My articles on education policy regularly appear in the Washington Post. In addition, my articles have appeared in publications such as ASCD Educational Leadership, Social Policy, and Language Magazine.
I've won several awards, including the Leadership For A Changing World Award from the Ford Foundation, and was the Grand Prize Winner of the International Reading Association Award for Technology and Reading.
You can check out three hundred radio show segments I've done on BAM! Education Radio.
I was a community organizer for nineteen years prior to becoming a public school teacher.
In the personal area, I'm married and have three children and four grandchildren.
A basketball team I play for has come in last place every year since 2014, so I should not give up my day job for a career in sports.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014I Had a horrible class last year. The Class coming in appears less streetwise. I thought the book really had some great ideas for managing the classroom and intend to try many of them, although this is my last year before I retire. I have taught for the last 29 years, and before last year I taught Mentally Challenged K-1 Students in a 6:1:1 class for the last 15 years. This was a big change with little training and little backup from administration. But I thought the book was helpful and would recommend it to any young teachers or those moving up to a higher grade with more problems.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2013One of the best books I have read on helping students realize their potential and motivating themselves to achieve their goals. The lessons are completely done and doable. I wish I could convince my administration to use these lessons for our Advisory classes rather than the character training we are doing. These lessons would really achieve real change whereas character lessons just scratch the surface. Since reading this book I have been researching the growth mindset and have become convinced that we must teach our middle school students about it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2013Through reflective examination of his own classroom practices, and the voices of practitioners and other experts in the field, Ferlazzo has put together a user-friendly volume for new and experienced teachers alike. As a veteran urban educator, I find that there is a richness and quality in this handy ebook that prepares me, anew, for the challenges I encounter each day in the classroom. The diversity of authentic voices collected in this volume are sure to promote genuine engagement with the critical subject matter.
Ferlazzo is a gifted chronicler of the many skills that make teachers great. He speaks respectfully of his relationships with students and provides important guidelines for how to develop those critical teacher-students relationships. Readers of Ferlazzo's other books will very much enjoy this new edition.
