- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2015Format: Perfect PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've read other books by Dr. DuFour, and I love his straightforward writing style. He has a way of getting to the heart of the matter in a no-nonsense, yet compassionate tone. This book is outstanding in every way, for the same reasons and more. Having taught for 20 years, I know what it is like to hear news stories and political blab about "the state of education today," and it never matched what I was experiencing in my school. Instead, I saw my colleagues working hard on behalf of their students, and I saw the majority of kids making strides and doing much more than I was expected to do when I was their age.
Dr. DuFour confirms what I already felt -- that our American schools and the educators in them are not failing, but are in fact doing what no other industrialized nation is doing when it comes to the demographics of the students we serve. However, the subtitle is also correct; we could do much better if we worked collaboratively and relentlessly in making sure we were meeting the needs of every child. Fortunately, he gives very specific steps toward making that change a reality.
This is a very practical book that offers encouragement and hope, which means it will make a great gift for some of my dear teacher friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2015Format: Perfect PaperbackVerified PurchaseNo one...and I mean no one makes a stronger case for making the shifts necessary to ensure learning for all like Rick DuFour. HIs depth of experience, knowledge and research doesn't leave you wondering what the 'right work' is...it leaves you with the simple question...Are we willing to do the 'right work.' So little is written about the great work educators are doing and have done. DuFour does highlights the many milestones of which educators should be proud, but doesn't stop there. If he highlighted only the great and often ignored positive results, this book could be viewed as educator propaganda. He celebrates what educators have accomplished amid decades of failed policies heaped upon them...and then RAISES THE BAR and challenges them to do better. Not only does he challenge them to be better...this book provides the WHY and the HOW. DuFours writing style just flows. It reads like a conversation. This book is a gift to any educator interested in going beyond posters to create a culture of learning for all.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2015Format: Perfect PaperbackVerified PurchaseAs I read this book, I found myself experiencing a host of emotions: I teared, I cheered (even did a few fist bumps), and was incredibly inspired by its contents. DuFour not only debunks the various myths designed to discredit public education, but more importantly, he shares crucial truths about the hardworking educators who serve in our schools, and strategies for strengthening their efforts by becoming effective professional learning communities. He challenges all of us in America to support the mission of educating all students at high levels using common sense and evidence, not relying on politically-driven or misguided assumptions. DuFour is eloquent and transformational--this is highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2015Format: Perfect PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt is with gratitude and deep abiding admiration that I write a review of this amazing book and its author, Dr. Richard DuFour. He takes us on a journey of highs and lows, confusion and clarity, and always brings us back to a laser focus on what is best for our children's education. Parents, legislators, and all educators should read this book. We know where we have been, we know where we are headed, and we know how to get there through the PLC framework.
