--Penny Kittle, author of Book Love
To be successful, teachers must constantly be learning, reflecting and growing to meet the ever-changing needs of the students in front of them. To many of us, this can seem like an overwhelming task. Who do I learn from? How can I keep growing as an educator? How do I keep the work I do relevant and fresh to myself and my students? Fortunately, Meenoo Rami has written this book which provides a road map for all of us to, yes, thrive, in our schools over the course of a career. And as Meenoo s principal, I can say that she lives the words of this book in her classroom every day. .
--Chris Lehmann, Founding Principal, Science Leadership Academy
Meenoo Rami has written the right book at the right time. In an era of corporate education reform, Thrive reminds us of how we, as teachers, need human interaction, intellectual fulfillment, and empathy --Troy Hicks, author of Crafting Digital Writing
Meenoo Rami has written the right book at the right time. In an era of corporate education reform, Thrive reminds us of how we, as teachers, need human interaction, intellectual fulfillment, and empathy just as much as our students. Rami encourages us to move beyond the mechanical acts of scripted schooling and mandatory professional development, offering us numerous ways to pursue our own passions and bring them to the classroom. She notes that "the rewards of this work will be paid with your students' success and engagement." Filled with practical suggestions, stories from fellow educators, and smart questions, Thrive will reward you as a reader, too. --Troy Hicks, author of Crafting Digital Writing

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase"What you fear to do is the very thing you need to do" (Rami 70). The plane ride to my spring break destination flew by extra swiftly this year as I had the pleasure of reading THRIVE: 5 WAYS TO (Re) Invigorate Your Teaching by English teacher at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, PA, Meenoo Rami. I find it to be the perfect read for teachers, coaches, and mentors of all experience levels. Meenoo’s words provide motivating ideas to create and collaborate in new ways. Her book should be required reading during a teacher’s first year of teaching and would make a great “one book” read for any school’s professional development program.
Sufficiently supplementing a busy educator's schedule, the brisk 94 pages provide just the right amount of invigorating inspiration to leave the reader ready to roll out new strategies within and outside of the classroom walls. Meenoo shares both what she does to empower her students, such as her class teen magazine as a research paper alternative, as well as what she does to help empower her colleagues, such as her origination of the now very popular and productive #engchat on Twitter. I remember well when Meenoo first started the #engchat in 2010 and was honored when she asked me to host one of the earlier chats. I'm continually amazed at the connections made and resources gained from engchats. Many other Twitter chats formed out of her example.
The book is logically organized into five chapters on mentoring, networking, challenging, listening and empowering. Meenoo's friendly tone helps us young and old realize we are not alone in our uncertainties and anxieties we face as educators along the way. She shares her early feelings of isolation, poses targeted questions for each of us to ask ourselves as we initialize each new school year's goals, and tirelessly emphasizes the importance of connection in and out of our school building. Noting Daniel Pink, Rami outlines the three most important things teachers need to maintain motivation as they pass through classroom doors for perhaps decades at a time. I don't want to give away all of the valuable points and ideas laid out in this book; but please know this is definitely worth your time and dime. My book is highlighted, annotated and doggie-eared.
Meenoo most definitely deserves an A+ for sharing her knowledge, fears, and hopes. She inspires all the teaching souls like myself who have a number of books in our heads that we need to stop making excuses for not writing. I can't wait until her next book and thank her for the inspiration!!
P.S. As I'm writing this, my Twitter PLN is showered with National Poetry month ideas for approaching and analyzing poetry. Meenoo has a great idea in her book to emphasize the point that "we all use language to convey complex thoughts and feelings in playful ways" that I can't wait to try (Rami 76).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseDuring the last faculty meeting of the school year, my principal read a story to his high school staff - the one about two lumberjacks recently made popular by success-guru Stephen Covey. In case you are unfamiliar, an older lumberjack and a younger lumberjack compete to see who can saw the most wood. To the surprise of the somewhat cocky younger jack, the older man wins because he remembered to stop and "sharpen his saw." Thus, we all hobbled off to summer the reminder that we need to not just rest, but to hone our spirits and our skills before returning to teach in fall.
These were words I needed to hear. The 2013-14 school year had been challenging. I had added the NHS to the already long list of clubs and activities I advise, completed action research for my Master's, and taught an AP class for the first time. I wasn't burned out, but I hadn't cleaned my house in weeks and I was kind of in survival mode. Thrive: 5 Ways to (Re)Invigorate Your Teaching by Meenoo Rami was just what I needed to regroup and regain perspective.
I think this is an important book because though, as one reviewer said, its contents may be "common sense," it is a reminder that it is necessary to take inventory and to articulate what we value. Rami shares her philosophy and its development warmly, inviting her readers to rediscover the power of collaboration. She reminds us that are practioners working on craft and we need to be aware of what we need and where to find it. She reminds us to be real in our classrooms and model vulnerability and gratitude as we learn with our colleagues and our students.
I joined Twitter last year and participated in a few #engchats. This year, as I got busy, I neglected to contribute. It was nice to hear again, that there are still things happening and my voice is still welcome.
I didn't necessarily learn anything new from reading this book, but that wasn't what I needed. The point - for me anyway - was to remember who I am and what I do know. Rami's friendly, passionate book is a call to action to all teachers to resharpen and keep reaching.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTHRIVE has honestly (re)ignited my passion as an educator. After being in the field for 11 years I completely connected to so much of the book personally and professionally. I studied this book with one other person, but as a pair we created a sense of community around this reading. Thrive has also pushed my thinking around mentors, building networks, and empowering students. Before reading the book, I would have never thought of connecting with multiple mentors, and the way Meenoo speaks of this concept makes complete sense. Yes, even after 11 years, I'm going to reach out to possible mentorS for myself! The book even gave me a sense of empowerment, a little more courage. I'm willing to approach the staff at my school to suggest reading Thrive and have discussions around it. There's recently been a lot of change on our campus and I think this would be a great way to connect newer teachers with those that have been there for a lot longer. Meenoo has a way of threading this idea throughout the book- it is for teachers that are just starting out but is DEFINITELY relevant to experienced ones as well. I really appreciate the way the book gives a message about us being strong in our ideas/beliefs and to take chances in building our personal, local and national networks. We don't have to go at this alone.
Then there's the chapter about empowering our students. There are practical ideas and examples of how we can support our students and make them the center of our work, which is why we went into this field in the first place, right...
I highly recommend this book and encourage reading it with others. I appreciate Meenoo's honesty and ability to deliver a much needed message in education.
