Editorial Reviews

Review

Dave Stuart’s These 6 Things is among the most helpful, passionate, practical, and insightful teaching resources I have ever come across. It is brimming with simple, practical―and exceedingly realistic―suggestions and strategies for immediately improving the quality of schooling and student work―starting tomorrow. These 6 Things is an impressive and arrestingly written book by a working teacher. I hope it gets a wide reading. -- Mike Schmoker

Dave Stuart has an important insight: that a skill kids already know how to do, which is argue, also happens to be a central one in the new standards for college readiness. In Stuart’s wonderful book, These 6 Things, he draws extensively on his own classroom experience to show teachers how to help students use their everyday argument skills to energize the classroom, meet these standards, and achieve success. An extra treat is that Stuart himself writes in a down to earth language refreshingly devoid of Educationese. If you’re a teacher or school administrator interested in turning your students onto argument, Dave Stuart is your man! -- Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein

What I appreciate most about Dave Stuart’s book These 6 Things: How to Focus Your Teaching on What Matters Most is that he is one of us: a classroom teacher sharing with us what works for him in ways that will work for us in our own classrooms with our own students. When I read about the poster on his class wall that says "[In this class] we are all about becoming better thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and people," I think of the years of hard work I have watched Dave Stuart put into his craft and this book, and how the same statement applies to Dave Stuart himself: He is all about becoming a better thinker, reader, writer, speaker, person―and teacher, and showing us how we can do the same. -- Jim Burke

If you’re searching for balance as a teacher of literacy, search no further. Dave Stuart Jr.
offers a calming voice for a frenzied profession and provides practical classroom strategies that will help you teach adolescents in the rich and meaningful ways they deserve without becoming overwhelmed. This book is packed with ideas that are research-based, student-centered, and most of all, workable.
This is a book written for classroom teachers by a classroom teacher, one who understands the struggle of teachers to navigate the demands of standards and content and offers an accessible, sensible formula for classroom success. Dave is a guide, a mentor, an advocate, and a fellow traveler on the road to nurturing and educating students through positive, focused instruction. -- Barry Gilmore

In These 6 Things, Dave Stuart provides a framework and road map that is of value to educators at all stages of their careers, from novices to veterans. He reminds us all to focus in on the things that are most important and to do them well. Much of the book creates opportunities for the kinds of reflection and self-analysis in which most teachers do not have the opportunity to engage. A great tool for new teachers and seasoned teachers alike to find their "Everest" and pursue it. -- David T. Conley

These 6 Things is a joyful shot in the arm for experienced teachers as well as for novices. Is it possible to consolidate the most important aspects of teaching into one book―complete with relevant, engaging examples that have been tried and proven by teachers in various content areas? I wouldn’t have thought so, but Dave has managed to do it, all while affirming, encouraging, and acting as a "guide on the side" for those who may feel unsure about trying out new activities with their students. You’ll want to carve out some reading time for this book. The journey will yield wonderful rewards for both teachers and students. -- ReLeah Cosset Lent

Tired of PD books full of someone's theories and lacking practical strategies? T6T is the solution!
These 6 Things makes it evident that Dave Stuart Jr. is both: 1) extremely well-versed in translating education-related research for busy teachers 2) actually doing the work that is most impactful for his students every day in his real-life classroom After years of reading teacher professional development texts—over 100 books—, I quickly see through edu-books that emphasis an author's instructional opinions and overshadow instructional strategies and pedagogical research. Ugh! I no longer waste my time sifting through these authors' "beliefs" about what works in their unique settings. Thankfully, Stuart is NOT this kind of author! He takes the time to read everything from cognitive-science research on student motivation to what public speaking skills businesses desire of future employes. Then, he breaks this down into manageble action steps to do tomorrow in class. As a recovering perfectionist, I found These 6 Things hopeful and reassuring; moreover, the author graciously takes into account that fact that we just cannot do all that is asked of us (no more teacher guilt!). That's why he focuses on "what matters most." On top of that, the book uses engaging color photos, graphics, and online links. I especially loved the attached bulls-eye image that is used throughout the chapters to keep readers narrowed in on the "6 things." As Stuart details a particular research-based strategy, the bulls-eye image is set in the margin showing teachers how that activity hits on multiple areas of focus. This is definitely one of those PD books that will get marked-up, sticky-noted, and worn-out from regular readings! Highly recommended!

Five years ago, as a first year teacher trying to make sense of the alphabet soup of teaching and the whiz-bang strategy mentality that was was so new (and scary), Dave's blog was one of the places I turned for practical, concrete advice on how to make sense of all the clutter and focus on what worked and what was best for my kids. This book is no different. T6T is peppered with concrete examples of what works in the classroom without any of the angst caused by what I call the "flavor-of-the-week" strategies and buzzwords teachers are bombarded with every day. Even better, Dave has done the hard work of culling through the research (and I've tried - some of it is deadly dull) and pulled out the important concepts and presented them in a very readable format that I can actually use. His thoughtful approach to encouraging students to actually DO THE WORK and master the material, complete with "this, not that" quotes from his teaching practice, help me to improve my practice also, and I believe my kids are better for it. This is the kind of book that, as teachers, we can return to again and again, both for encouragement, and for the next move in our own progression in the classroom.

I have followed Dave Stuart Jr. ‘s blog for years and have been patiently waiting for a book that has all of his great ideas in one place. The book has finally arrived! Along with all of the actual teaching and learning techniques, classroom examples, and student work, the part I like the best is the way Dave asks teachers to think about their profession and the students they serve. He understands the demands of the working teacher and wants every one of us to work smarter, not harder. He teaches us to use the most effective techniques in order to advance our students’ “long-term flourishing.” I’ve used these techniques in my own classroom and can attest to their usefulness and engaging power. Every new teacher should read this book, in order to start off on the right foot, and then march next door to their veteran teacher team member, share their copy of the book with them, and help that teacher to focus, simplify, and move their students forward, all while maintaining their sanity.

DSJ does a fantastic job of focusing the often vast and impractical world of educational theory and philosophy into six core elements - each of which have a philosophical root and a practical application (one of my favorites being the case for speaking and listening through educational research and the instructional strategy of pop-up debates).

This is a great read for new and veteran teachers - developing nuance and giving us permission to simplify what we do in our classrooms in order to develop our students' cross-curricular skills of reading, thinking, writing, speaking, and listening.

10/10, DSJ - can't wait to read the next one!

It is rare to find a book about teaching that can be practically applied across a variety of school settings...and yet you can find that in Dave Stuart’s These 6 Things. I teach at an alternative education site but Dave’s theories from his comprehensive school experience transfer seamlessly. Having attended his professional development and been a reader of his blog, I am not surprised at how thorough, passionate, caring, and practical his ideas about the classroom are. His book is chock full of ideas that I cannot wait to implement. Additionally, Dave doesn’t claim to be coming up with new material, rather distilling his own research and experience. You don’t need to read five more 500 page books, take a class, sacrifice your outside of school life, and get another degree. Here are 6 things that you can focus on and know that you are improving your practice. Accessible advice from a real, passionate, GOOD teacher for others in the field constantly striving to do better for our kids.

As a new ELA teacher, I am so thankful to have T6T as a guide to help me focus on what is most important for my students. Dave's emphasis on the purpose of education being the "long term flourishing" of students is so refreshing in this age of high stakes testing, and I especially appreciate his practical tips for cultivating in our students the beliefs that motivate them to work hard in our classes. Dave is obviously genuine: in his care for his students and his fellow teachers, and in his commitment to spending time with his wife and children; this need for balance in his life has pushed him to find ways to make teaching sustainable, and in T6T he shares with his readers how to "work smarter, not harder" in expanding the teaching of literacy across the disciplines. T6T is full of sensible and straightforward ideas for helping students to learn the skills and build the knowledge that will be so crucial to them in every area of their future lives.

I am an avid follower of Dave Stuart’s blog and I’ve bought and read all of his self-published texts too. This book, like everything else he does, is clear, concise, and immediately practical. I literally take all his advice and apply it to my classroom. I think he has made me a better teacher, helped me to be more focused and less scattered on what I’m trying to accomplish, and more mindful of the academic choices I’m making everyday. The two things I love about Dave (after spending years reading his stuff I feel like I can call him by his first name) are: (1) he is an avid reader and only recommends the best and most applicable texts and (2)that he is a real teacher in a real classroom with real students. He is on a journey to do the best job he can while still being a father and a husband. He knows the struggle and he shares with us the wisdom he discovers on the way.
