Reading Rhetorically 4th Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Offering concise yet thorough treatment of academic reading and writing in college, Reading Rhetorically, 4th.ed., shows students how to analyze texts by recognizing rhetorical strategies and genre conventions, and how to incorporate other writers’ texts into their own research-based papers.
Four important features of this text:
1. Its emphasis on academic writing as a process in which writers engage with other texts
2. Its emphasis on reading as an interactive process of composing meaning
3. Its treatment rhetorical analysis as both an academic genre that sharpens students' reading acuity and as a tool for academic research
4. Its analytical framework for understanding and critiquing how visual texts interact with verbal texts
This brief rhetoric teaches students how to see texts positioned in a conversation with other texts, how to recognize a text's rhetorical aims and persuasive strategies, and how to analyze texts for both content and method.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat price and more than half the cost of buying from college bookstore. I needed for a college class and this had great pricing and FAST shipping.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHaving read this book, it was eye-opening. Coming from a background of not having learned how to "read" critically, this book was great in exposing me to the "way" in which to read, how to get more out of reading. Seems odd, but had I never needed to read this book for college, I would've missed out.
It would make a great read for someone who appreciates the finer details of an activity, but is unaware many. In this case, a reader....will surely appreciate this.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWonderful resource of information. This text was the bedrock of the Expository Reading and Writing Course. It is not an easy read, of course, but it does provide a good framework of what rhetorical reading should look like for college readers
