Editorial Reviews
Review
"Mary Cay Ricci provides a thorough foundation in what growth mindset is, why it matters, and just as importantly, how to foster it in key stakeholders, namely teachers, students, and parents. Ricci advocates teaching parents about the brain research as well as giving them tools for reflecting on the kinds of praise they use with their children. She provides suggestions and resources for explaining the brain research and how the brain works. She offers not a single lesson but a series of experiences and tools for walking students along the path of understanding what fixed and growth mindsets are, and how they affect the way we perceive effort, intelligence, and success. Administrators or coaches will also find this book helpful for the concrete plan it provides for professional development."
Katie Gordon, MiddleWeb, 3/11/14
"Mindsets in the Classroom is filled with actionable ideas to improve school culture. It builds nicely on Dweck's original book (which itself is surprisingly easy to read) by specifically addressing the three essential audiences: teachers, parents, and students. As a teacher who works with gifted students, you'll find clear tasks to integrate into your classroom as well activities for staff meetings."
Ian Byrd, Byrdseed.com, 3/1/14
"With a well-integrated emphasis on critical thinking skills, the chapters in this title offer practical tips founded in Ricci's direct experience and research from various sources (references are included) to positively impact learning."
Katie Engen, Children's Literature, 5/1/14

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2013As a family mediator and educational specialist working with parents and teachers on behalf of twice exceptional children, I find Mary Cay Ricci's book to be an essential and valuable new resource on how to build a school culture of growth mindsets. By laying out the groundwork on the recent brain-based research, she sets out the facts for us to understand and promote Growth Mindset theory, shifting our thinking on how we view intelligence. Ricci brings the practical and strategic application of growth mindset theory into the classroom through instruction that differentiates and teaches critical thinking. She gives educators a road map for transforming classrooms and schools.
Ricci devotes two chapters, "How can students learn from failure?" and "What message should parents hear about growth mindset?" that are particularly important for not only parents, but for anyone working with children and young people. By believing in the brain's ability to create new connections, we can understand the critical importance of creating opportunities for children to grow their brains. Believing that with effort, persistence, and motivation, all children can succeed, is the heart of this belief. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves and works with children.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2014This book, along with Mindset by Carol Dweck, have changed the way I think and the language I use with the students. It was very eye opening for me, and I have been sharing this with others since I opened it. Mindset in the Classroom does a great job of developing this philosophy through rich activities, books, language and more. My students have truly enjoyed all of the activities and books I have shared with them to help them "Grow their Brains." It has changed my teaching, and my mind!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2015I really thought that this was a great book to introduce an audience to the "growth mindset." As an elementary teacher I'm thinking that I'm going to make "failing my classroom theme this year: Finding An Important Lesson Inviting Needed Growth!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2013Absolutely Terrific! A must read for any educator. It is well written and gives excellent advice on how to talk with the children, parents, and school to help create an atmosphere with a growth mindset. I sat down on a Friday night and continued to read until I finished the book. I woke up on Saturday and reread it so that I could highlight the book and take notes for myself. I am excited to have other teachers in my school read it so we can discuss how best to implement the idea in our school. Thank you Mary!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2014This book is based off of Dr. Carol Dweck's Book Mindsets: The New Psychology of Success. It gives practical ideas about how to implement the findings of her research in the classroom and create a culture for growth rather than fixed mindset. I recommend this book for educators and other youth workers who want to learn more about how to help students understand that their brains do not remain static and that through facing challenges, their abilities become stronger and they are able to do things that they did not think they could do. It also guides adults in how the language that we use will influence youth to develop a fixed or growth mindset.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2017I greatly enjoyed reading "Mindsets in the Classroom" the first time around, and the updated version is like icing on the cake. Mary Cay Ricci is renowned in the field of education for her work with growth mindset, and I also appreciate the fact that she is very responsive to dialogue and questions. My colleagues and I have learned a great deal from her. I love the updates that include makerspaces and instructional coaching, as these topics are extremely relevant and gaining prominence in our field.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2020I appreciated the simplicity of the writing in this book. It makes the work easily accessible by new and seasoned teachers. I have added this book as part of my school’s summer reading list to help my staff prepare for the 2020-2021 school year.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2015A lot of this I knew from reading Carol Dweck's mindset book, but chapter 8 has some good ideas for how to start the process in your own class. You are also provided with some websites and other literary examples to use. I am also very happy to have found out where to buy a neuron from and look forward to adding it to my class's soft toys with meaning collection. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone! Fascitating!
I just can't be silent about this book! I am a trainee primary teacher in England and this book has literally transformed my understanding of teaching - both from theoretical and practical points of view. The book is full of practical advice and hands-on approaches on how to transform your classroom so that every child gets an opportunity to flourish. This is definitely the most useful and inspirational book I have read during my PGCE (and I read many), I recommend it not just to teachers, but to anyone who has children. "Mindset" by Carol Dweck would work as an excellent accompaniment as many ideas overlap (Ricci's work is largely based on Dweck's research about growth mindset).

5.0 out of 5 stars Pédagogie utile en classe

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
This is my first ever review because I feel so strongly about this book and its message. I wish this book could be mandatory for every teacher, education administrator and parent. Thought provoking and inspiring. Simply written, personally I would have liked more research data, but a great introduction to some powerful concepts. Focus is on educators and how to create a "growth" mindset environment in classes and schools but great for parents too to ensure that a child's key influencers are communicating the same message. Buy this book.
