In his new book,In the Best Interest of Students: Staying True to What Works in the ELA Classroom , teacher and author Kelly Gallagher notes that there are real strengths in the Common Core standards, and there are significant weaknesses as well. He takes the long view, reminding us that standards come and go but good teaching remains grounded in proven practices that sharpen students' literacy skills.Instead of blindly adhering to the latest standards movement, Gallagher suggests:Increasing the amount of reading and writing students are doing while giving students more choice around those activitiesBalancing rigorous, high-quality literature and non-fiction works with student-selected titlesEncouraging readers to deepen their comprehension by moving beyond the four corners of the text-Planning lessons that move beyond Common Core expectations to help young writers achieve more authenticity through the blending of genresUsing modeling to enrich students' writing skills in the prewriting, drafting, and revision stagesResisting the de-emphasis of narrative and imaginative reading and writingAmid the frenzy of trying to teach to a new set of standards, Kelly Gallagher is a strong voice of reason, reminding us that instruction should be anchored around one guiding question: What is in the best interest of our students?

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Kelly, a baseballoholic and a self-described expert at negotiating airports, is in his 33rd year of teaching at the high school level. He currently teaches at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California. He believes that there is no greater pleasure than teaching someone something. Teaching is artistic, it matters a great deal, and I can never get the job down perfectly. Kelly thinks that professional development should treat teachers as such - professionals. I know in the classroom that good things happen when my students have meaningful discussions. I know as a teacher myself that my craft sharpens when I am given the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with my peers. And let's have a laugh or two while we are at it. Writing his six books for Stenhouse was a solitary experience. Though I have written outlines prior to each of my books, I have yet to follow any of them step-by-step. That is why I find writing rewarding - because the act of writing itself generates new thinking, and new thinking is always exciting.

This is an awesome book. I don't even know where to start. I guess I can start by using one of the strategies described in the book: 6 Things You Need to Know about IN THE BEST INTEREST OF STUDENTS

    1. THIS IS NOT A MANUAL OF SKILLS
This book is not a training manual full of random strategies. Rather, it is a book that critiques the CCSS while providing useful and EFFECTIVE tools that seek to address them and their shortcomings.

    2. YOU MAY FEEL LIKE THE CHOIR ( but you'll enjoy the sermon)
Gallagher expresses many thoughts about the frustrations of education with which most teachers are familiar. These issues include the lack of literary study in the classroom, teaching to the test, and the pressure to cover ever more demanding curriculum. But here's the great part: Gallagher also provides an arsenal of arguments for teachers to use when confronting these issues with administration. Sure, your principal may say no to your increased use of literature, but at least you can actually fight the good fight with valid arguments and information.

    3. THE STRATEGIES ARE EASY TO INTEGRATE
The proof is in the pudding (I'm using one now). As Gallagher moves through his examination of the CCSS he provides ample strategies that can be used to address said standards WITH EXAMPLES. I really enjoyed this approach. As I learned more about the standards, I also learned about simple strategies that I could integrate in my practice. Oh how I wish the powers-that-be had done just that when they rolled out these new standards instead of allowing us to stumble around in the dark for an entire year.

    4. THE STRATEGIES WORK AND ENGAGE BY DESIGN
Gallagher has compiled a series of teaching strategies that are easy to teach and learn. For example, you probably already get the gist of this one. Just imagine modifying this for science or history topics once your students have done some reading and research. Most if not all of the strategies can be modified for different content areas. He includes strategies for all learning modalities addressed in the standards (reading, writing, listening, speaking, language) as is analysis progresses. And because he emphasizes modeling, all of the strategies come with models. In addition, the strategies seek to spark exploration in students. The activities suggested allow for choice and a more student centered classroom.

    5. THE TITLE IS MISLEADING
The book's title emphasizes the "ELA Classroom" but the real focus is LITERACY. The principles in the book can be applied to all core subjects because it essentially addresses the literacy standards. With CCSS, literacy is the business of al core content areas, not just ELA. It would be an excellent introduction for those teachers just now entering the world of reading and writing instruction in content ares other than English. Here those teachers can find vital information about how to engage low readers and struggling writers. They can modify nearly all of the strategies. Lastly, they can understand how literacy is not confined the ELA.

    6. THE READING IS JUST AS ENGAGING AS THE STRATEGIES
Kelly Gallagher is a great writer. Even I was tempted to skip all the blah-blah-blah to get to what I saw as the meat (the strategies). But I'm glad i started at the beginning. After the first page I reached for my pen, highlighter and post its. Each chapter was full of wonderful revelations about the standards and ways to approach them. DO THE READING. It is well worth it.

I think that Gallagher’s credibility as a teacher, writer, and speaker made me want to read what he has to say about this topic. I was not disappointed. Four years after the release of his book, Write Like This, his newest one offered fresh insight and made me think critically about the way I teach my students. He has a point and he used his platform well.
I read every page of the book and was completely convinced about the relevance of the key points he expressed. I have observed a trend in my classes and I am alarmed. As a Reading workshop teacher, I see a growing trend of kids abandoning the reading of thicker, chapter books. His body of work included research finding and his own experiences as a teacher.
Before I used to think that accesbility of technology gadgets is the main reason why my students don’t read as much as my previous students used to. Gallagher in Chapter 1 pointed out that the kids who took AP in 2012 were the 1st generation NCLB kids from Pre-K to HS. These kids scored very low in their AP test. That just hit me, what will happen to the preceding generations of students?
I highly recommend this book to ELA and ESL secondary teachers because they will learn a lot and will be able to use the strategies mentioned.

Kelly Gallagher is among the very best voices in education today. I own all of his books, and if you follow Gallagher's writing as I do, his latest book will not disappoint. Gallagher highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the CCSS, and updates us on how education has shifted since he wrote Readicide. Unfortunately, little has changed in the teaching of English language arts, so there are still an abundance of classrooms where the learning is not student-centered, and teachers are not readers and writers who learn alongside their students.
Gallagher offers a wealth of writing strategies that he employs in his own classroom, as well as suggestions for how to build in more student choice in what is read, and how to balance whole class book study with other kinds of reading experiences. I appreciate that Gallagher dedicates an entire chapter to enhancing speaking and listening skills, components of language arts that are frequently neglected since they are not tested. I know that I will be referencing this book daily as I finish this school year, focusing on what is in the best interest of my students, rather than on the latest standards based mania.

This book spells out the changes that educators need to make in order to create thriving ELA classrooms. The only thing I don't like about the book is that it primarily focuses on high school teaching. As a 4th grade teacher, I had to adapt some of the ideas to the level my kids are on. Some parts of the book I just skipped since they did not apply. Overall, I found the main ideas to be compelling. I will apply much of what I learned right away.

When I was student teaching at CSUF, my fellow teachers and I the opportunity to visit with Kelly in his classroom. I was inspired by the incendiary, rebelliousness of his commentary, and by the fearlessness in which he fought for the best interests of his students.

Readicide was a revelation to me as I began teaching ultra-high risk, 18-25 year old drop outs in a gang-rehab charter school. How to make gang-bangers read--and love--Romeo and Juliet? Not as hard as one might think--if we don't kill it by over-teaching it. (My students still come into my class and say "I'm biting my thumb at you!").

This book, for teachers of all disciplines struggling with applying Common Core, is infinitely helpful. For English teachers, the exhortation is to go beyond the limitations of the standards. I like that about you, Mr. Gallagher.
