Editorial Reviews
Review
The book synthesizes concepts from classical rhetoric, modern rhetoric, Common Core State Standards, and Jennifer’s teaching experience and wisdom. It manages to be both academic and personal, with practical teaching strategies on every page…Reading this book is like accompanying the author on a personal intellectual journey through rhetoric and teaching, a journey on which you learn, grow, and pick up handouts that you can use on Monday morning. I recommend it highly.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book is written in comprehensible chapters that explain the concepts and provides resources with lesson ideas for the classroom. Each chapter introduces new concepts that build on information previously stated in the book, but does not need to be read in sequential order. There is also an appendix with resources for classroom lessons.
The book has changed the way I teach analysis of texts in the classroom.
As a high school English teacher and AP language and composition teacher the book is a wonderful resource.
I would highly recommend this book and it should be required reading for new teachers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI purchased this book because I was looking for ANYTHING that would help me understand the complexities of rhetoric, and how to teach it to students. I was taking on AP Language and Composition for the first time, and felt really underwater from the get go. This book is chock-full of strategies to help students understand complex reading and writing around rhetoric. I took away so much from this book, because it is clear throughout the book the Fletcher is an educator at heart and everything comes back to THE STUDENTS, and how we can help them see complex concepts more clearly, and therefor engage with them more fully!
If you are a teacher like me, and always question whether a book is worth the price tag -- if it will give you enough to actually use in classroom -- do not fret with this book! It is well worth your hard earned $$

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis may be the best book I've found on teaching argument--and I've read a lot. As a new AP Lang teacher, I was desperate for help. We use The Language of Composition by Shea & Scanlon as our class text, but the argument unit is eh. I relied heavily on Teaching Argument Writing by Hillocks, which is also a great book, but I think more applicable to MS or early HS. Fletcher's book is easy to understand with great practice. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am a high school composition and literature teacher. This text was recommended by a friend, and I immediately looked it up on Amazon. I found myself revising lesson plans for the coming week after reading from the "look inside" excerpts, so I bought it. This text ups the rigor for language arts students -- something that is truly needed in U.S. high schools. If you are a teacher, you will probably appreciate what this text will contribute to your lessons and units.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe author's hard work, clear writing, and intriguing teaching strategies are ill-served by her publisher's blurry and illegible illustrations. It's really too bad, and it detracts from the book's value.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am beyond excited with the depth of this book. She digs deep into rhetoric and shows you HOW to teach critical thinking.
I have 17 years experience in education, a plethora of books, and I can't put this one down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a very good book for teaching argumentation in post-secondary institutions. The book no only has explanations and examples of arguments and fallacies, but also activities which are interesting and fun for students. There are prompts for essay writing and an informative chapter on Aristotle's rhetoric.
