The English Teacher's Companion, Fourth Edition: A Completely New Guide to Classroom, Curriculum, and the Profession 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
A new companion for every English teacher
“Why have I written an entirely new English Teacher’s Companion? Because to offer you anything less would suggest I had not grown, changed, or evolved these past fifteen years. I am not the same teacher I was when I wrote the first edition.” Jim Burke
The fourth edition of English Teacher’s Companion is 100 percent new. Jim Burke has rewritten it to model methods for reaching a new generation of students―when all the ground rules for teaching are changing.
A teacher’s teacher and a recognized leader in English/language arts education, Jim understands the need for instructional methods that connect the why of teaching to the how. “This edition makes the research behind my practice more explicit,” he writes. “It is also anchored in the Common Core State Standards, because I am still teaching every day―so these standards are my standards too.”
Weaving in ideas for working with ELLs, struggling readers, and technology, English Teacher’s Companion, Fourth Edition:
- looks comprehensively at the research and reality of our profession, our students, and our content
- provides practical and thoughtful methods for meeting standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language study
- makes assessment a priority, not only to find out what students know but to help practitioners improve.
“I have taught English for nearly 25 years, and I love it,” writes Jim Burke. Never has this love been more apparent than in the numerous lessons and teaching moves he includes as well as in the many examples of his own classroom language. Trust the fourth edition of English Teacher’s Companion, and bring the passion, power, and practicality of one of America’s best teachers to your classroom.

About the Author
Jim Burke is the author of numerous bestselling Heinemann titles, including the English Teacher’s Companion, Fourth Edition and What’s the Big Idea? The question he’s always tried to answer is “How can we teach our students better?” He seeks these answers daily through his work in his own classroom at Burlingame High School in California where he still teaches after twenty years. Facing the same constraints and challenges as every other teacher, Jim shares his creative solutions in bestselling professional titles with Heinemann such as Reading Reminders and Writing Reminders as well as through Heinemann Professional Development Services. As part of his commitment to helping teachers and learning how to use the latest technologies, he founded the English Companion Ning, described by Education Week as “the world’s largest English department” and winner of several Edublog Awards for Best Social Network for Education. In addition to the EC Ning, Jim offers a steady stream of recommended resources through his website (www.englishcompanion.com) and Twitter (@englishcomp) where he is ranked in the top 100 educators to follow at the top within the online English teacher community.
Jim serves on several national commissions related to adolescent literacy and standards, including the Advanced Placement English Literature and Language Course and Exam Review Commission with the College Board and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) where he serves on the Content Technical Working Group, which advises PARCC on the national assessments being developed for the Common Core State Standards. In addition, he is a senior author on the Holt McDougal Harcourt Literature series.
Jim has received numerous awards, including the NCTE Intellectual Freedom Award, the NCTE Conference on English Leadership Award, and the California Reading Association Hall of Fame Award. He served on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Committee on Adolescence and Young Adulthood English Language Arts Standards.
Through his work in the class and on such commissions, Jim Burke seeks not only to clarify but reimagine what English should be, honoring the past even as he works with others to create the future of the discipline he loves so much. Visit his website (www.englishcompanion.com) for more information.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2014Don't let Burke's first book lead you into thinking this 4th edition of the same book is one you should pass up. If you're an English teacher (I've been one for 28 years), you need his book. The first one was good, in that it offered page after page of workable ideas and so forth, but this one is completely different. First of all, he somehow seems to have become more (I need a stronger word than passionate; he's not just passionate and driven and dedicated, it's clear he's made teaching his life work.) He's a missionary. He's intense and focused, but there's a deep commitment behind what he does that makes it work. He believes in his students, every single one of them, and he teaches them extremely challenging books (his ninth graders read The Kite Runner; his tenth graders read Heart of Darkness). He seems to be truly Socratic: gentle, kind, observant, warm and caring, but ever the prodder. The depth of this book may seem a bit daunting, as the sheer amount of work he gets his kids to do might be as well, but the methodical way he builds his classes, the extremely high expectations, the devotion to detail AND the grasp of the big picture, make him stand out. Get the book. Even if you got the first one, and it's collecting dust or you gave it away, get this one. Get it, keep it, read it, re-read it. You'll use it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2014Absolutely loved the latest edition of the English Companion by Jim Burke. It includes tons of valuable and succinct resources that every teacher can actively use in their classroom. He gives actual examples of things that he has done in his classroom, and I really appreciate the way he talks to me throughout the book - like I am his colleague and he is just mentoring me. This is the best resource that I have found thus far during all of my graduate classes and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024I used this book when I taught pre-service teachers at the university. If you want to be an effective English teacher of high school students, you need to read and learn from this text.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2013I loved the original "Companion" but this one is a more extended version to include more lesson plans and ideas for modern-day teaching. The one thing I don't like is that he does alot of "talking" in this edition; meaning there are more facts and opinions about reading and writing than giving ideas for lessons and classroom activities. Less advice than the first edition. Many of these facts and opinions are already known by teachers. Also, many of the lessons are taken from his AP & senior class whereas the first edition included all four high school grades. I teach Sophomores and Juniors.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2022The author is a well-known guru and the text is helpful for any language arts teacher at the HS level.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2018Same old, same old as far as pushing liberal political literature, but it's a sign of the times if you want to get your books published unfortunately. The author does give food for thought even if you don't agree with him, because he makes his points intelligently. The book is full of little stories about his own teaching experiences which are useful since he is a genuine teacher in San Francisco with a lot of experience to share.
